What is a freelance SDET?

A Freelance SDET, or Software Development Engineer in Test, is a professional who works independently on a contract basis to design, develop, and maintain automated testing frameworks and tools for software applications. Unlike traditional testers, SDETs possess strong programming skills and often write code to test other code, ensuring software quality throughout the development lifecycle. As freelancers, they work with multiple clients or projects, bringing flexibility and specialized expertise to software quality assurance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance SDET?

To thrive as a Freelance SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test), you need a solid understanding of programming, test automation, and software QA principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (such as Selenium or Cypress), CI/CD pipelines, and source control systems like Git is essential. Strong problem-solving, self-management, and client communication skills help you stand out in freelance roles. These qualifications ensure the delivery of robust, reliable software solutions while meeting diverse client expectations and project deadlines.

Freelance Sdet works independently on various projects, often remotely, while QA Engineers are typically employed full-time within organizations. Both roles require testing knowledge, but Freelance Sdet emphasizes flexibility and diverse project experience.

How do freelance SDETs typically balance multiple client projects and testing priorities?

Freelance SDETs often manage several projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational skills and clear communication with clients about deadlines and expectations. It's common to use project management tools to track testing tasks, bug reports, and automation scripts for different clients. Establishing regular status updates and prioritizing tasks based on project criticality helps ensure quality deliverables without overextending. Additionally, being proactive about clarifying requirements and negotiating realistic timelines is essential for maintaining client satisfaction and personal work-life balance.

About Velocitor Solutions

Velocitor Solutions is a leader in enterprise fleet management and mobile innovation, celebrating over 25 years of profitably growing technology. We go beyond standard telematics by offering a comprehensive, managed ecosystemโ€”managing over 200,000 mobile assets for Fortune 500 clients across North America. Our VTrack platform integrates GPS tracking, AI powered video telematics, and real time data to drive safety and efficiency. We are in a pivotal phase of growth and looking to expand our technology team.

Why Join Velocitor Solutions

Youโ€™ll help build quality engineering as a first class capability inside a high availability platform that customers depend on every day. Youโ€™ll write production grade automation across mobile, web, and API layers, embed quality gates directly into our CI/CD pipelines, and partner closely with engineering and product to ship faster with fewer escapes. This role blends software engineering and quality engineering, requiring hands on coding, automation framework development, and deep involvement in the software development lifecycle.

You will work within an Agile team, collaborating with developers, product managers, and QA engineers to design robust test strategies, implement automation, and drive quality engineering practices across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Test Automation Development: Design, develop, and maintain scalable automation frameworks for UI, API, and backend systems using modern programming languages.
  • Software Development: Write clean, efficient, and reusable code for test tools, automation scripts, and quality engineering solutions.
  • Quality Engineering: Embed quality throughout the SDLC by implementing shift left testing practices, CI/CD quality gates, and continuous testing strategies.
  • API & Integration Testing: Build and execute automated tests for RESTful APIs and microservices with strong knowledge on APIs.
  • Collaboration: Partner with cross functional teams (Engineering, Product, DevOps) to ensure quality is built into every release.
  • Debugging & Root Cause Analysis: Investigate defects, perform root cause analysis, and work closely with developers to resolve issues efficiently.
  • Performance & Reliability: Contribute to performance, scalability, and reliability testing efforts.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation for test frameworks, strategies, and processes.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in software development and test automation with strong hands on development skills
  • Strong coding skills in one or more languages such as Java, Python, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, Pytest and React JS.
  • Hands on experience with automation tools such as Playwright, Appium and Selenium.
  • Experience with API automation tools such as Rest Assured, Playwright API Testing and Postman
  • Experience integrating automation into CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or GitHub Actions.
  • Strong understanding of SQL and relational databases.
  • Proficiency with Git or similar tools.
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with AI assisted development/testing tools (e.g., Cursor IDE, LLM based test generation, intelligent automation).
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Retirement savings plan options.
  • Opportunities for career advancement and professional growth.
