What is executive search?

Executive search is a specialized recruitment service that organizations use to find highly qualified candidates for senior-level and executive positions. Unlike traditional recruitment, executive search focuses on proactively identifying, approaching, and evaluating leaders who may not be actively seeking new opportunities. This process is often conducted by executive search firms or consultants, who use their networks, industry knowledge, and assessment skills to match top talent with critical organizational roles. The service is essential for filling roles that require specific leadership experience, discretion, and a strategic fit with company culture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive search professional?

To thrive as an Executive Search professional, you need expertise in talent acquisition, strategic networking, and a strong understanding of specific industry sectors, often supported by a degree in business, human resources, or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), CRM platforms, and tools like LinkedIn Recruiter is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, discretion, and persuasive communication set top performers apart in this role. These capabilities are crucial for identifying, attracting, and securing high-caliber executive talent while maintaining client trust and confidentiality.

How does an executive search professional typically collaborate with client organizations during a search assignment?

Executive Search professionals work closely with client organizations to understand their unique leadership needs, company culture, and strategic goals. This collaboration often involves regular meetings with key stakeholders, such as board members or senior executives, to refine the search criteria and discuss progress. Throughout the process, Executive Search professionals provide market insights, candidate assessments, and facilitate interviews, ensuring transparent communication and alignment. The partnership is consultative, with the search professional acting as both an advisor and a project manager to deliver the best possible leadership talent.

Over time, you will assume increasing responsibility for your own portfolio of searches, talent mapping initiatives, and strategic talent projects while continuing to expand your advisory capabilities and executive search expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with Executive Search senior team to support Managing Director searches and critical succession planning initiatives across BlackRock.

  • Conduct market mapping, talent research, and competitive intelligence to identify and assess executive talent.

  • Develop and maintain diverse pipelines of senior talent through direct sourcing, networking, referrals, and market research.

  • Engage and cultivate relationships with prospective candidates, effectively communicating BlackRock's opportunities, culture, and value proposition.

  • Support succession planning efforts by identifying, evaluating, and benchmarking external talent aligned to future leadership needs.

  • Prepare talent maps, candidate assessments, market intelligence reports, and executive-ready search updates for senior business leaders and HR executives.

  • Partner with senior recruiters to provide insights on talent markets, competitor activity, organizational structures, and emerging leadership trends.

  • Assist in managing candidate processes, stakeholder communications, interview coordination, offer development, and onboarding activities.

  • Meet with prospective and newly hired executives to build market intelligence, strengthen referral networks, and deepen competitive insights.

  • Maintain accurate search activity, market intelligence, and candidate information.

  • Contribute to delivering a highly personalized, high-touch candidate and stakeholder experience throughout the search process.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 3-7 years of executive search, recruiting, talent acquisition, talent research, or related experience.

  • Experience working within a leading executive search firm or high-performing in-house executive search function strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated success identifying, engaging, and attracting passive candidates through research and direct sourcing.

  • Experience supporting executive-level hiring, succession planning, talent mapping, and leadership pipeline development.

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple complex assignments simultaneously.

  • Ability to build credibility and relationships with senior candidates, business leaders, regional and divisional Heads of HR, and other key stakeholders.

  • Experience supporting executive compensation discussions, offer negotiations, and closing processes preferred.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with executive-level polish and professionalism.

  • Strong judgment, exceptional attention to detail, discretion, and ability to handle highly confidential information.

  • Self-starter with a proactive, commercial, and client-focused mindset.

  • Undergraduate degree required.

What Sets You Apart

  • Executive presence and intellectual curiosity.

  • Strong relationship-building and influencing skills.

  • Commercial awareness and passion for executive talent markets.

  • Ability to think strategically while delivering against tactical priorities.

  • A consultative approach to partnering with senior stakeholders.

  • Commitment to delivering exceptional candidate and client experiences.

  • Thrives in a fast-paced, high-performing environment with competing priorities.
