What does an Executive Coach do?

An Executive Coach helps leaders and executives enhance their leadership skills, decision-making abilities, and overall performance. They provide personalized guidance, feedback, and strategies to help clients navigate challenges, improve communication, and achieve organizational goals. Executive coaches often work with professionals in high-level positions to foster personal and professional growth. Their role involves assessing strengths and weaknesses, setting development goals, and offering tools for sustained success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Executive Coaching position, and why are they important?

To thrive in executive coaching, you need a strong background in leadership development, business acumen, and psychological principles, often supported by a degree in a related field and coaching certification (such as ICF, EMCC, or similar). Familiarity with assessment tools like 360-degree feedback systems, psychometric platforms, and virtual meeting software is also important. Exceptional listening skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to build trust and rapport set outstanding executive coaches apart. What are some common challenges executive coaches face when working with clients?

Executive coaches often encounter challenges such as helping clients navigate resistance to change, addressing deeply ingrained leadership patterns, and maintaining confidentiality in sensitive situations. Establishing trust while challenging clients to think differently can require finesse and patience, especially when working with high-level executives under pressure. Coaches also balance the expectations of both the client and sponsoring organization, ensuring alignment with broader business goals. Overcoming these challenges requires adaptability, a solid ethical grounding, and strong communication skills, making the work both demanding and highly rewarding.

Is there a demand for executive coaches?

The demand for executive coaches is growing as organizations seek leadership development and executive performance improvement. Factors such as increased focus on leadership skills, organizational change, and professional certifications contribute to the expanding market for executive coaching services.

Additionally, candidates should have experience working with a wide range of professionals and have experience or evidence of the potential for success in teaching a broad population of students, including first generation students and international students.

Key Responsibilities:

● Teach and develop graduate-level courses within the MSECOC program.

● Advance thought leadership through applied research relevant to industry needs.

● Build and maintain industry relationships to enhance the program's market relevance and visibility.

● Support the growth and professional development of adjunct faculty.

● Engage in meaningful service or administrative work to the department, school, and/or university

● Contribute to the Division's mission by supporting its applied professional goals and fostering external partnerships.

This includes collaborating with industry professionals and academics to advance the program's applied professional mission.

Position Details:

The successful candidate will teach in-person within the graduate program with occasional online assignments; develop courses; advise students; collaborate with other faculty and industry partners; and engage with the broader NYU SPS academic community, as appropriate. Faculty are expected to contribute to the Division's ongoing investments in scholarly work/research, pedagogy, and corporate collaboration. They will also engage in meaningful service or administrative work to the department, school, and/or university. This full-time position is a nine-month appointment with a two-year renewable faculty contract.

Compensation:

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $100,000-$160,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

This position offers a unique opportunity to join a dynamic academic community and shape the future of executive coaching and organizational consulting at NYU SPS.
