Job description

Job Description
To assist Pharmacists in areas of the department, master technical skills and develop professionally.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, prepares and distributes medications according to prescription or physician order.
Completes all of the following activities:
Unit Dose - Includes packaging, filling, and distributing medications. Prepackages medications for use in unit dose. Orders drugs and supplies using PAR stock levels (where available); stock shelves.
Delivery - Includes the transportation of medications and supplies from the pharmacy to areas outside the pharmacy. This includes medication cart delivery and floor stock to: cardiac catheter Lab, AMDC(automatic medication dispensing cabinet), scheduled runs, crash carts
An understanding of pharmacy computer systems is required. Must understand the Epic RX message system, compounding repackaging, dispense prep, review of medication list, EMar, lab results.
Medical terminology - Understands and is able to communicate with other healthcare professionals using basic medical terminology. This includes understanding brand and generic pharmaceutical names and the hospital formulary system. 40%
Compounding - Selects bulk pharmaceutical according to prearranged and pharmacist approved work sheets and prepares final products for subsequent check by a pharmacist.
2-4 year interns: Complete Medication Reconciliation in the ED
3-4 year interns: Complete consults: vancomycin, warfarin
IV area
Parenteral Products - Using aseptic technique, prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile products (including chemotherapy, if trained), fills syringes, and reconstitutes small volume injectable pharmaceuticals for subsequent check and dispensing by a pharmacist.
TPN/CVVH order entry - Able to operate BAXA system and Abacus system. Verifies all orders with a pharmacist, informs the pharmacist of any medications that do not seem in line with the patient's condition or previous medications. Assures compliance with USP 797 guidelines. Assists technicians and pharmacists in processing I.V. orders when needed.
AMDC and CII safe Automated Dispensing machines - Ability to sign in, load, refill, remove, print reports and understand the basic operating procedures for the
Automated Dispensing machines and related systems.
Follows procedures for narcotic inventory in the CII safe
Narcotic Control - Able to understand and operate the current technology involved in the record keeping and distribution of controlled substances. This includes the AMDC and related systems.
Other:
Pneumatic tube - Able to operate the pneumatic tube station, including secure send. Able to prioritize medications and coordinate their distribution to the floors.
Communication skills - Answers telephone, receiving and relaying messages as needed. Able to communicate appropriately with other healthcare professionals both within and external to the department of pharmacy.
Assisting pharmacists where needed
Maintains a safe environment according to policy and procedure.
Maintains the department in a neat, clean and orderly manner.
Follows departmental and hospital safety policies and procedures
Maintains equipment according to procedure. (ie. cleans the laminar air flow hood)
Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION:
Enrolled in accredited College of Pharmacy
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
Pharmacy experience preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Good communication skills
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
Registered with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy as an Intern
Exception for first year students. Must be accepted to an accredited College of Pharmacy School and must obtain intern license from the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy within the first month of starting school.
