What is the Opportunity

The Associate Director, Commodities, Product Control role involves managing and leading a team of analysts responsible for daily financial Profit and Loss (P&L) reporting, P&L decomposition, as well as accuracy of General Ledger for Commodities trading desk. The product scope involves derivatives and bespoke products related to energy, environmental, precious metals, base metals, cross-asset, and agricultural products. The employee will act as the main liaison with Front Office, Middle Office, Information Technology, Sales, Operations, Valuations and other operating units with projects and issues related to Commodities trading activity. The AD must ensure that all daily and monthly accounting, reconciliations, and attestations are performed and are accurate and complete by the team. The AD will also make assessments as to impact on existing processes and to streamline activities whenever possible; as well as actively participating and leading the team in taking on the broader initiatives sponsored by the bank.

What will you do?

  • Build and lead a high performing team in a demanding technical environment related to complex derivative products
  • Manage and mentor a team of co-op students, analysts, senior analyst, and managers
  • Execute change management while leading employees through the process and keeping them focused on business priorities
  • Represent Product Control in meetings acting as business lead for specific projects relating to Front Office, IT, Finance initiatives
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for consistent support across all business units through staff cross training
  • Ensure all reconciliations and attestation packages are complete in a timely fashion, with issues escalated/resolved effectively
  • Act as backup to the Director of Commodities Product Control
  • Manage information flow of all trading activity in accordance with the standing order to ensure that business partners obtain relevant information
  • Attest to all monthly accounting entries to the G/L and conduct reconciliations to ensure figures are properly tied back to the systems of records
  • Review and sign off on daily and monthly procedure manuals and documentation is complete and up-to-date for the area
  • Maintain a solid knowledge base of how various products are handled by all source trading systems as well as the downstream dependent systems

What do you need to succeed?

Must have:

  • 5+ years of Product Control experience in a derivatives environment
  • Strong leadership, analytical, problem solving, communication and people management skills
  • Project Management experience and strong Change Management mindset
  • University degree and CA/CMA/CGA/CPA/CFA (or equivalent experience)
  • Accounting knowledge for on and off-balance sheet products a must
  • Advance understanding of procedures and operational controls as they relate to trading systems and workflows
  • Proficient in Excel, Access and Word
  • Ability to work in a demanding environment with tight deadlines; effectively and reliably underpressure
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance from director
  • Ability to make decisions and deal effectively with multiple stakeholders
