What does a disability attorney do?

As a disability attorney, you represent clients who want to claim disability benefits from their disability insurance or social security. One of your main responsibilities is to help your clients win their claim or appeal to receive disability insurance coverage, supplemental security income (SSI), or social security disability income (SSDI). Your job duties include client consultations, case research, and hearings before an administrative law judge. You may charge a contingency fee to handle cases. You need the same qualifications as any practicing lawyer to pursue a career as a disability attorney. You need excellent negotiation and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a disability attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Disability Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and deep knowledge of disability and Social Security law. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and e-filing systems is typically required. Outstanding advocacy, empathy, and strong written and verbal communication skills help attorneys effectively represent and support clients with disabilities. These skills and qualities are crucial for navigating complex legal processes and ensuring clients receive the benefits and protections they deserve.

What are some typical challenges disability attorneys face when representing clients, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Disability Attorneys often encounter challenges such as navigating complex government regulations, managing large caseloads, and advocating for clients with diverse medical and personal backgrounds. Applicants should be prepared to handle detailed documentation, tight deadlines, and emotionally charged situations. Building strong communication and organizational skills, as well as staying current on Social Security and disability law, can help attorneys succeed in this field.

What is the difference between Disability Attorney vs Social Security Disability Claims Specialist?

Disability AttorneySocial Security Disability Claims Specialist
Legal degree and license to practice lawTypically no law degree; specialized training in SSD claims
Handles legal representation and appealsAssists clients with application processes and documentation
Works in law firms or legal settingsOften employed by government agencies or disability service organizations
Focuses on legal rights and advocacyFocuses on claim submission and procedural guidance

While both roles assist individuals with SSD claims, a Disability Attorney provides legal representation and handles appeals, whereas a Social Security Disability Claims Specialist offers support with application processes and documentation. Their work environments and credentials differ, but both aim to help clients secure disability benefits effectively.

Job description

PJI Law, PLC, a boutique, service-focused, and fast-growing Virginia law firm, is looking for another kind, smart, and motivated attorney to join our wonderful team in our Richmond office.

We are looking for a full-time, Virginia-licensed attorney with civil litigation and trial experience. This position is ideal for an attorney who would enjoy the opportunity to interact with clients daily, design and execute strategies for their cases, and have significant independence in handling their caseload while at the same time having a strong support system from an excellent team of attorneys and committed support team members. Our firm exists to help those who wish to obtain legal protection and security for their families, sometimes in the wake of a personal, professional, or financial loss, and this position is crucial in allowing us to effectively help them.

We like our attorneys to focus on doing what they do best, which is excellent legal work. Therefore, we do not expect our attorneys to be responsible for any business development, attending bar association mixers, or engaging in marketing for the firm, unless they want to. We do not expect our attorneys to file documents, troubleshoot printers, or write blogs. We are well-staffed and are proud to have a happy team, a structure that gives our attorneys access to a reliable support team for assistance. This allows our attorneys to focus on their core talents and work efficiently.

Our firm is professionally managed, and our office is a team environment. You will be working with other dedicated members of our team who work hard to get the job done right, who take pride in their work, and who support each other through thick and thin. Every year since 2022, we have earned the prestigious "Great Place to Work" certification, with our employees over these years praising our firm as a great place to work in an anonymous third-party survey. Our approach has allowed us to succeed and build a loyal client base that has sustained our strong growth and has earned us various awards as well as enthusiastic client reviews. As a result, every year since 2023, our firm has been honored with a place on the Inc. 5000 list, which celebrates the fastest-growing companies in the United States.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Experience in civil litigation, including Virginia circuit court trial experience, is required.
  • Experience in commercial, contract, and/or real estate litigation is a plus, but not required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to closely follow established policies and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to genuinely connect with clients and potential clients.
  • DC and/or Maryland licenses are a plus, but not required.

Compensation includes a base salary and productivity bonuses, which together would be in the range of $120,000 - $170,000+, depending on experience.

Additional benefits include:

  • Work-from-home Mondays
  • Origination bonuses
  • Health/dental/vision insurance
  • 401(k) with an employer match
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Paid holidays
  • Paid time off
  • Full estate plan
  • CLE stipend
  • Paid membership in certain professional organizations
  • Access to professional and educational resources
  • Fun and growth-driven team events
  • Complimentary snacks and beverages
  • Free and convenient parking
  • A beautiful, new, and clean work environment
