What are some typical challenges disability attorneys face when representing clients, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Disability Attorneys often encounter challenges such as navigating complex government regulations, managing large caseloads, and advocating for clients with diverse medical and personal backgrounds. Applicants should be prepared to handle detailed documentation, tight deadlines, and emotionally charged situations. Building strong communication and organizational skills, as well as staying current on Social Security and disability law, can help attorneys succeed in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a disability attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Disability Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and deep knowledge of disability and Social Security law. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and e-filing systems is typically required. Outstanding advocacy, empathy, and strong written and verbal communication skills help attorneys effectively represent and support clients with disabilities. These skills and qualities are crucial for navigating complex legal processes and ensuring clients receive the benefits and protections they deserve.

What is the difference between Disability Attorney vs Social Security Disability Claims Specialist?

Job description

Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, a national law firm with a strong reputation in litigation and insurance-related matters, seeks a senior associate, senior counsel, or service partner-track attorney to join its growing Defense Litigation practice in Phoenix.

This opportunity is particularly well-suited for an accomplished litigation attorney who has developed strong legal, case management, and client service skills and is seeking a platform for long-term professional growth. Candidates who may have limited partnership advancement opportunities at their current firm, but who are interested in assuming greater responsibility and pursuing a clear path to firm leadership, are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will work directly with clients and firm leaders on sophisticated litigation matters involving commercial litigation, product liability, personal injury defense, and other complex disputes. Attorneys will have meaningful opportunities to manage cases, take and defend depositions, participate in trial preparation, supervise junior attorneys, and contribute to strategic client development initiatives.

Hinshaw values lawyers who are excellent practitioners, trusted client advisors, and future leaders. The firm offers a collaborative environment where attorneys can continue building their practices while benefiting from the resources, geographic reach, and reputation of a national platform.

Position Requirements
  • Admission to the Arizona Bar and in good standing.
  • 6+ years of defense litigation experience, including commercial litigation, product liability, personal injury defense, or related areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage litigation matters and client relationships.
  • Experience drafting and arguing substantive motions, managing discovery, taking depositions, and preparing cases for trial.
  • Strong legal writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
  • Interest in business development and building long-term client relationships.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior attorneys is a plus.
  • Admission in other jurisdictions where Hinshaw maintains offices, is a plus.
What We Offer
  • A realistic opportunity for advancement, including consideration for a service partner role for qualified candidates.
  • Direct client contact and significant responsibility from day one.
  • A sophisticated national platform with cross-office collaboration opportunities.
  • Hybrid work flexibility and a commitment to professional growth.
  • Competitive compensation and bonus opportunities.
  • A collegial culture that values high-quality legal work, collaboration, and long-term career development.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced litigator seeking greater responsibility, expanded client exposure, and a long-term career path with a growing national practice.

As an EOE/AA employer, Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP will not discriminate in its employment practices due to an applicant's age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and veteran or disability status.
