Job description

Director of Engineering

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel South Bend

We are seeking a highly organized, results-driven Director of Engineering to lead all engineering and facilities operations for our recently renovated, 293-room full-service hotel in downtown South Bend. This role requires a leader who can bring structure, accountability, and technical execution to a complex property environment while driving improvements in guest satisfaction, asset performance, and operational efficiency.

This is not a maintenance-only role — we 're looking for someone who can assess, prioritize, and fix issues, implement sustainable systems, and lead a team with clear direction and urgency.

Compensation: $90,000 – $120,000 (based on experience)

Position Overview

The Director of Engineering is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day leadership of all building systems, preventative maintenance programs, capital projects, and life-safety compliance. This individual will establish operational discipline, ensure timely resolution of outstanding issues, and create a culture of ownership within the engineering team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Leadership
    • Lead and develop the Engineering team with a strong focus on accountability, communication, and performance standards
    • Establish clear expectations, workflows, and follow-through across all maintenance operations
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for all facility-related priorities and escalations
  • Execution & Problem-Solving
    • Identify, prioritize, and drive resolution of critical building and guest-impacting issues (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural)
    • Ensure all work orders, projects, and repairs are completed efficiently and to standard
    • Take ownership of ongoing challenges and deliver measurable improvements
  • Preventative Maintenance & Asset Management
    • Build and enforce a robust preventative maintenance program
    • Ensure guestrooms, public spaces, and back-of-house areas consistently meet brand and ownership standards
    • Maintain detailed documentation and tracking of maintenance activities and equipment performance
  • Projects & Capital Planning
    • Oversee renovation punch lists, vendor coordination, and capital improvement projects
    • Partner with ownership and leadership on long-term asset strategy and budgeting
    • Ensure projects are completed on time, within scope, and aligned with operational needs
  • Compliance & Safety
    • Maintain full compliance with life safety systems, fire code, OSHA, and brand standards
    • Lead safety initiatives, inspections, and emergency preparedness efforts
    • Ensure proper documentation, certifications, and audit readiness at all times
  • Financial Oversight
    • Manage department budgets, control expenses, and optimize resource allocation
    • Drive cost-effective solutions without compromising safety or guest experience

Qualifications
  • Proven leadership experience in hotel engineering or large-scale facilities management
  • Strong technical knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and building systems
  • Demonstrated ability to organize teams, implement structure, and drive results
  • Experience managing capital projects, renovations, and vendor relationships
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills with a hands-on leadership approach
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced, high-demand hospitality environment

What We’re Looking For
  • A leader who can walk in, assess quickly, and take control of operations
  • Someone who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and execution-focused
  • A professional who holds themselves and their team accountable to high standards
  • A problem-solver who doesn’t defer issues — they own them and fix them
