What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Manager, you need a deep understanding of software development principles, project management, and several years of experience in coding and leading teams. Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and certifications in Agile or Scrum methodologies are often required. Strong leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help motivate teams and facilitate collaboration. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality software solutions on time while fostering a productive and positive development environment.

What are some common challenges Developer Managers face when balancing team productivity with individual growth?

Developer Managers often find it challenging to simultaneously meet project deadlines and foster individual team member growth. Balancing the delivery of high-quality software with providing mentorship, career development opportunities, and regular feedback can require careful planning and prioritization. These managers typically address this by establishing clear communication channels, setting realistic expectations, and allocating time for one-on-one meetings to support both team and personal development goals.

What are Developer Managers?

Developer Managers are professionals who oversee software development teams, ensuring that projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. They act as a bridge between developers and upper management, handling tasks such as project planning, team coordination, and performance evaluations. Developer Managers also mentor team members, help resolve technical challenges, and align development work with business goals. Their role is crucial for fostering a productive and collaborative work environment in software organizations.

Job description

Job Summary:

The Manager, Engineering - Catalog role is at the heart of iHerb's AI transformation. This role will lead a lean, high-seniority team of engineers while staying hands-on as a player-coach. The Manager, Engineering - Catalog will own delivery commitments, grow engineers, and model the AI-native development practices that will become the standard across the engineering organization.

This role will be among the first leaders to validate and shape iHerb's AI-driven SDLC golden path. Leading the Catalog engineering team, responsible for iHerb's product catalog platform. You will drive feature delivery across a full-stack codebase, coordinate with product and design, and set the technical bar for a team of mid-to-senior full-stack engineers.

Job Expectations:

  • Own sprint planning, delivery commitments, and retrospectives for the Catalog team.

  • Carry an active IC load: writing, reviewing, and shipping full-stack production code weekly using AI-assisted tooling.

  • Partner with the Principal Engineer, Catalog on architectural direction and the platform roadmap.

  • Hire and onboard engineers; enforce a high AI-native bar in interviews.

  • Drive collaboration with product managers and design without waiting for top-down coordination.

  • Contribute improvements back to the shared AI-driven SDLC golden path and skills library.

The duties and responsibilities described above may provide only a partial description of this position. This is not an exhaustive list of all aspects of the job.  Other duties and responsibilities not outlined in this document may be added as necessary or desirable, with or without notice.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required:

  • AI-driven SDLC (required): hands-on experience shipping production code with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor. Must be able to describe how AI changed your workflow and what guardrails you put in place.

  • Full-stack orientation: comfortable contributing across layers of the stack; not specialized in only one layer. Track-specific stack requirements are listed above.

  • Delivery ownership: track record of owning commitments end-to-end, from scoping through shipping and retrospectives.

  • Engineering excellence: strong opinions on code quality, testing strategy, CI/CD, and what it means to ship production-grade software at speed.

  • People leadership: experience hiring, onboarding, and growing engineers; able to give direct, constructive feedback.

  • Communication: clear written and verbal communicator; comfortable driving alignment across product, design, and peer engineering teams.

  • Production experience with one or more backend languages used at iHerb: C#/.NET, Go, Python, or Java. .NET/C# is the primary stack today and is strongly preferred.

  • React or equivalent modern frontend framework.

  • Relational database experience with MS SQL Server or Postgres.

  • Ability to contribute across the full stack, backend through frontend, not just one layer.

  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail

  • Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task

Preferred:

  • Background in e-commerce, retail tech, or high-traffic consumer platforms.

  • Experience working in globally distributed teams.

  • Contributions to internal developer tooling, platform frameworks, or SDLC process improvements at org scale.

Equipment Knowledge:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Experience with Google Business Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms) preferred

Experience Requirements:

Generally requires a minimum 7-10 years of software engineering experience, with at least two years in a team lead or engineering manager role.

Education Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field preferred, or a combination of education and equivalent work experience.

Judgment/Reasoning Ability:  Able to identify, troubleshoot and resolve problems quickly using sound judgment, poise and diplomacy.  Ability to use judgment and reasoning skills, and determine when to escalate issues, as required, in a timely manner.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a Team Member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member is regularly required to talk and hear. The Team Member is frequently required to sit, walk, climb stairs, use hands and fingers, bend, stoop and reach with hands and arms.  Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the work day. The Team Member may occasionally lift or move office products and supplies up to 25 pounds. Proper lifting techniques required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment: The noise in the work environment is usually moderate. Other factors are:

  • Hectic, fast-paced with multi-level distractions

  • Professional, yet casual work environment

  • Office / Warehouse environment

  • Ability to work extended hours as required
