Job description

We are seeking an experienced Formula Development Manager to lead our R&D efforts in an FDA-regulated industry. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in formulation, research and development, and project management, with the ability to oversee complex product development processes from concept to commercialization.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Food Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: A minimum of 7 years in a formulation and/or R&D role within an FDA-regulated industry (nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, food, research, personal care, etc.).

Skills & Knowledge:

  • In-depth familiarity with manufacturing and R&D lab processes, equipment, raw materials, and quality standards.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and product development best practices.
  • Effective leadership and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

1. R&D Leadership and Workflow Management:

  • Oversee the daily operations and workflow within the R&D department.
  • Manage R&D projects, providing progress updates and ensuring timely completion.

2. Product Development and Scale-Up:

  • Check, approve, and revise final formulas, manufacturing batch records, and product quotes.
  • Troubleshoot lab pilots and manufacturing batches to ensure successful product scale-up.
  • Draft accurate manufacturing mixing instructions and batch records for production teams.

3. Technical Guidance and Collaboration:

  • Advise clients and internal teams on technical issues related to formulations and product development.
  • Partner with manufacturing teams to resolve production challenges.
  • Meet with suppliers to evaluate raw materials and provide support for the purchasing department.

4. Compliance and Documentation:

  • Interpret and implement regulatory requirements for R&D formulations.
  • Draft and manage change controls, deviations, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to formulations and R&D processes.

5. Team Development:

  • Train and mentor R&D Associates and Lab Technicians on R&D processes, documentation, and lab equipment.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment to drive team success.

6. Additional Duties:

  • Sample R&D lab batches to support the development process.
  • Provide input on finished product specifications and raw material sampling needs.
  • Advise on R&D lab equipment and recommend upgrades as necessary.
