What is a Deployment Engineer?

A Deployment Engineer is an IT professional responsible for implementing, configuring, and maintaining software systems or applications in various environments, such as development, testing, and production. They work closely with development, operations, and quality assurance teams to ensure smooth and efficient deployment processes. Deployment Engineers often automate deployment workflows, troubleshoot issues during releases, and help optimize systems for scalability and reliability. Their goal is to enable seamless software delivery and minimize downtime or disruptions during updates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Deployment Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deployment Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, systems administration, and deployment methodologies, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools (like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef), CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring smooth, reliable software releases and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Job description

At IT Labs, we are looking for a hands-on Deployment Engineer to support one of the most exciting companies in the AI and engineering space.
Our client is building a next-generation platform that combines AI, simulation, and high-performance computing to help engineers design everything from aircraft and cars to semiconductors and energy systems faster and more intelligently. Instead of relying only on physical prototypes and long testing cycles, their technology allows customers to simulate and optimize complex products in software using AI-powered digital models.
The company was founded by leaders from Formula 1 and advanced AI, has raised significant funding, and works with some of the world's most innovative organizations in Aerospace, Automotive, Energy, Manufacturing, and Semiconductors.
In this role, you will work directly with customer engineering teams to deploy and support Kubernetes-based environments across AWS, Azure, and on-premise infrastructure. This is a highly technical, customer-facing role focused on troubleshooting, deployment, and solving complex infrastructure challenges.
The role is best suited for someone who enjoys working in fast-moving environments, learning quickly, and taking ownership with limited onboarding.
What You'll Do
  • Work directly with customers to understand their infrastructure, Kubernetes, networking, and security setup
  • Lead technical discovery and deployment-readiness discussions
  • Deploy and troubleshoot solutions in:
    • AWS EKS
    • Azure AKS
    • On-prem Kubernetes environments
    • OpenShift, Rancher, or vanilla Kubernetes
  • Use Terraform, Helm, and Kubernetes operators to install and configure the platform
  • Troubleshoot issues such as:
    • Pods stuck in Pending / CrashLoopBackOff
    • Firewall and networking issues
    • Failed image pulls
    • Resource and scaling limitations
    • Cluster configuration problems
  • Support deployments in restricted and air-gapped environments
  • Work with product and platform teams to report issues, create workarounds, and improve the product
  • Support customers after deployment and resolve ongoing infrastructure issues
  • Help improve documentation, onboarding, and deployment best practices
  • Occasionally travel to customer sites when needed
Requirements:
  • Strong hands-on Kubernetes experience in production environments
  • Strong AWS experience, especially EKS and customer-owned AWS accounts
  • Strong Terraform experience
  • Experience with Helm and Kubernetes operators
  • Good understanding of:
    • Networking
    • Firewalls
    • VPCs and subnets
    • DNS, ingress, and routing
    • Security restrictions and access control
  • Experience troubleshooting complex deployment and infrastructure issues
  • Experience working directly with customers in a technical role
  • Strong communication skills
  • Self-starter mindset and ability to work with limited documentation and onboarding
  • US citizenship
Nice to Have
  • Azure AKS
  • OpenShift or Rancher
  • Argo CD
  • AWS GovCloud
  • Air-gapped environments
  • GPU / AI workload experience
  • NVIDIA GPU Operator
  • Crossplane
  • Experience in regulated or high-security environments
What to Expect
  • Fast onboarding and early involvement in customer calls
  • A lot of troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Customer-facing technical communication, not project management
  • Work across different customer environments and technologies
  • Occasional short-notice travel may happen
Working Conditions
  • 12-month contract with possibility for extension
  • Full-time, 40h/week
  • Contract or B2B arrangement
  • PTO provided
  • Background check required
