What are Build and Deployment Engineers?

Build and Deployment Engineers are IT professionals responsible for automating, managing, and overseeing the processes involved in building software applications and deploying them to production environments. They work closely with development, QA, and operations teams to ensure that code changes are properly integrated, tested, and released efficiently and reliably. Their duties often include managing version control systems, configuring CI/CD pipelines, troubleshooting build failures, and maintaining deployment scripts. This role is critical in enabling continuous delivery and minimizing downtime during software releases.

What are some common challenges faced by Build and Deployment Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Build and Deployment Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex build pipelines, handling integration issues, and ensuring consistent deployments across multiple environments. These challenges can be addressed by implementing robust automation tools, maintaining clear documentation, and collaborating closely with development, QA, and operations teams. Staying up to date with the latest CI/CD practices and proactively identifying bottlenecks also helps in maintaining smooth and reliable deployment processes.

What is the difference between Build And Deployment Engineer vs Software Developer?

Build And Deployment Engineers focus on automating and managing the software release process, ensuring smooth deployment across environments. Software Developers primarily create and maintain software applications. While their roles overlap in understanding software development, their core responsibilities differ significantly, with Build And Deployment Engineers emphasizing deployment automation and Developers focusing on coding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Build and Deployment Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Build and Deployment Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development processes, version control systems, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, often supported by a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and scripting languages such as Bash or Python is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer being advantageous. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across teams and respond quickly to build or deployment issues. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, efficient software releases and maintaining the stability of production environments.

Job description

The Deployment Technician works ahead of our Deployment Engineers to get warehouse sites ready for our robots. Travelling across North America, you will assemble and build robots on site, run initial tests to confirm they are fully operational, survey the warehouse environment, and verify that the power and connectivity requirements are in place,  setting the deployment team up for a smooth, predictable installation.

This is a hands-on, travel-heavy role and the foundation of a clear career path: over time you will be trained on the full deployment process and grow into a Deployment Engineer, helping us build a strong, continuous pipeline within the team.

The role involves regular travel to warehouse sites around North America, typically arriving 2-3 weeks ahead of the Deployment Engineer's installation visit. It is crucial that you are able to travel for extended periods, often 1-3 weeks at a time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assemble and build robots on customer sites ahead of deployment, typically 2-3 weeks before the Deployment Engineer arrives to carry out the implementation.
  • Perform initial testing and commissioning of each robot, confirming it is fully functional before handover to the deployment team.
  • Conduct detailed warehouse surveys and feed accurate site information back to the deployment team to inform installation planning.
  • Carry out detailed Wi-Fi and mobile/cellular connectivity surveys across the site, documenting coverage and flagging any gaps or risks.
  • Confirm with the customer that the required power supply and infrastructure are in place ahead of deployment.
  • Prepare, pack, and coordinate the return shipment of tools and equipment to our Nashville facility.
  • Develop and maintain clear documentation of build steps, test results, site conditions, and survey findings for both customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Maintain effective communication with customers and the deployment team throughout the site-readiness phase.
  • Progressively build deployment expertise through structured on-the-job training, working towards a Deployment Engineer role.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Hands-on experience assembling, building, or maintaining hardware or mechanical systems in operational environments, including assembly, disassembly, and on-site debugging.
  • Comprehensive technical understanding of computer systems; prior experience with autonomous hardware systems or computer vision applications is preferred.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently and reliably on customer premises.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively across North America for extended periods, often 1-3 weeks at a time.
  • Valid driving license required.
What we need from you
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset, with the demonstrated ability to address technical challenges effectively on customer premises.
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability,  your work sets the foundation for a successful deployment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences.
  • A genuine appetite to learn and grow into a Deployment Engineer over time.
Benefits

Starting from the interview process and continuing into your career with us, you will be working by our four Operating Principles:
