Job Description:

We are seeking aSystems / Software Engineerto join theFreeBSD Operating System teamwithin the HPE Networking division. In this role, you will design, develop, debug, and validatekernel and system-level softwarethat powers HPE networking platforms at scale.

You will work onFreeBSD kernel, drivers, and platform software, enabling new hardware, improving reliability and performance, and solving complex system-level problems across software and hardware boundaries.

This role will be on-site in Sunnyvale, CA 2+ days a week. Current schedule is Tuesday/Thursday in office, with more days on-site as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, debug, and maintainFreeBSD kernel and system-level software

  • Lead and contribute toplatform bring-up and hardware enablement

  • Analyze and resolve complex issues spanningkernel, drivers, hardware, and firmware

  • Make soundarchitecture and design decisionsto optimize performance, scalability, and reliability

  • Review code and designs to ensure high quality, correctness, and maintainability

  • Contribute to and improvetest infrastructure and automation

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including platform, hardware, QA, and architecture

  • Providetechnical guidance and mentorshipto junior engineers

Basic Qualifications

  • This role will be on-site in Sunnyvale 2+ days a week. Current schedule is Tuesday/Thursday in office, with more days on-site as needed.

  • Typically5+ years of experiencein system-level software development

  • Strong expertise inFreeBSD OS internals, kernel programming, and system software

  • 5+ years of experience developing and validatingkernel drivers and platform software

  • 5+ years of Proven ability todebug complex issues across kernel, drivers, and hardware

  • 5+ years of experience resulting in a strong proficiency inC/C++and complex data structures

  • Solid understanding ofconcurrency, multi-threading, IPC, and memory management

  • Familiarity withTCP/IP networking, virtualization, or distributed systems is a plus

  • Experience withtest automation, including debugging failures and analyzing logs

  • Scripting experience inPython, Rust, or similar languages

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills

  • Self-driven, proactive, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
