Summary/ Objective:
Provide the sales department and customers with the necessary support for all aspects of datacom solutions, including structured cabling, surveillance, fire alarm, and access control opportunities. This position assumes ownership of data sales product and service offerings and supports the sales department's efforts in meeting company goals, profitability targets, and desired sales results.
Essential Functions:
Sales
  • Assume ownership of data sales efforts in assigned territory, including sales and gross profit performance.
  • Provide support and guidance to Outside Sales, Inside Sales, and Industrial Automation staff to maximize effectiveness in growing the data business.
  • Execute departmental and company DEP goals and work with other Data Team members to develop and execute the department plan.
  • Participate in vendor, sales, specialist, and marketing activities that support datacom growth and market development.
  • Interact with sales management on key business issues, training needs, account coverage, and customer support as it relates to the data business.
  • Maintain a personal presence at top data accounts and establish solid working relationships with purchasing, project estimators, project managers, engineers, vendors, and customers.
  • Maintain records on sales activity, including quotations, customer contacts and cancellation of outdated quotations, and monthly sales call activity and opportunity tracking in CRM.
  • Find and communicate pull-through opportunities for other product lines at target accounts.
  • Use all available tools and systems to assist in following up on projects and quotations
  • Contribute when in SYD and vendor meetings, and set a proactive, positive example for the team to follow.

Plan & Spec Project
  • Receive project assignments from the appropriate coordinator, sales team member, or customer.
  • Review project documentation, drawings, specifications, and customer requirements for data-com-related opportunities.
  • Identify applicable certifications, compliance requirements, and project standards.
  • Assemble material takeoff / B.O.M. and formulate approximate project budget based on documentation and supplied quantities.
  • Develop bid strategy and communicate with vendors, contractors, and outside sales personnel.
  • Obtain project pricing from selected vendors and discuss project margins with the outside salesperson or sales manager.
  • Transmit final bid documents to applicable contractors and internal sales personnel using company systems and formats.

Design Build Project
  • Receive project assignments from the coordinator, outside sales, or directly from the customer.
  • Review project design requirements and determine materials and vendors needed to meet datacom system requirements.
  • Assemble material takeoff / B.O.M. and support the development of project scope, design intent, and pricing strategy.
  • Develop bid strategy and communicate with vendors, contractors, and sales personnel.
  • Obtain project pricing from selected vendors and coordinate margin strategy with the outside salesperson.
  • Transmit final design and bid documents to applicable contractors and internal sales personnel.

Post Bid Responsibilities
  • Collect and communicate customer and salesperson feedback to vendors and adjust bid strategy as needed.
  • Relay bid result information for internal reporting and follow up on awarded and non-awarded opportunities.
  • Participate in bid follow-up discussions in coordination with outside sales.
  • Solicit buy pricing from appropriate vendors to support project negotiations and help secure orders.
  • Once an order is awarded, compile material price breakdowns, required submittals, and turnover documentation for project execution.
  • Convert approved bids to sales orders and produce purchase orders to vendors as required.

Other Duties
  • Respond to incoming customer phone and email requests for quotations, technical product support, and datacom system recommendations.
  • Purchase material in company systems as required and track and expedite material to meet customer timelines.
  • Maintain sales data by continually canceling outdated bids and providing price feedback.
  • Participate in joint planning and sales calls with other SYD team members and manufacturer representatives.
  • Support ongoing competency development, maintain confidentiality on sensitive issues, and support the SYD Way in daily activities.

Competencies:
  • Knowledge of datacom, surveillance, fire alarm, access control, and related markets.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to learn, grow, and adapt to change.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and company sales, quoting, or project management systems preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a strong customer focus

Work Environment:
  • This job operates primarily in an office setting with the balance of the time split between visiting various job sites, customer sites, branches/warehouses, and attending meetings. This position requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, internet, smart phones, and photocopiers.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive business information

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer, including extensive use of monitors, keyboards, and phones
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and handling documents
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, and reaching while in office, warehouse, or job site environments
  • Ability to visually review technical drawings, project specifications, and detailed documentation
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of materials or equipment (typically up to 20-30 pounds) when visiting job sites or warehouse locations

Travel:
Daily travel is required for this position; however, overnight travel is subject to the specialist's discretion.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of one year of structured cabling experience preferred.
  • BICSI coursework or equivalent training preferred but not required.
