How much do contract mediator jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 29, 2026, the average yearly pay for contract mediator in the United States is $98,344.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $65,000.00 and $107,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract Mediator position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Mediator, you need a strong background in conflict resolution, negotiation, and contract law, often supported by a relevant degree and professional mediation certification. Familiarity with case management software, legal research tools, and online mediation platforms is typically beneficial. Outstanding interpersonal skills, impartiality, and in-depth listening abilities set top mediators apart. These competencies are vital for facilitating agreements, maintaining trust, and efficiently resolving disputes between contracting parties.

What is a Contract Mediator job?

A Contract Mediator is a neutral third party who helps resolve disputes between parties involved in a contract. They facilitate communication, clarify misunderstandings, and guide negotiations to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Unlike a judge or arbitrator, a mediator does not make decisions but helps parties come to their own resolution. Contract Mediators often work in legal, business, or labor disputes where avoiding litigation is preferred. Their goal is to save time, reduce costs, and maintain professional relationships.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Mediators, and how are they addressed in the workplace?

Contract Mediators often navigate complex negotiations involving conflicting interests and emotionally charged situations. A common challenge is maintaining strict neutrality while also guiding parties toward mutually acceptable solutions. Most organizations support mediators with thorough training, regular case discussions, and access to legal or technical experts when specialized knowledge is needed. Building strong communication and rapport with stakeholders is essential, and many workplaces foster collaboration among mediators to share best practices and problem-solving strategies. These resources help mediators remain effective and resilient in even the most challenging cases.

Job description

Location: San Francisco Bay Area (Office in Mill Valley, CA)

Position Type: Contract; Remote with occasional on-site meetings

Experience Level: 5โ€“10 Years Preferred

About Us

We are a small, established Bay Area law firm serving clients primarily in Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. Our practice includes a wide range of civil litigation matters, including business disputes, contract claims, real estate and property-related disputes, and landlord-tenant matters across some of the most dynamic courts and local jurisdictions in California. We value practical problem-solving, strong client relationships, and a supportive, collaborative environment where attorneys have direct responsibility and meaningful autonomy.

Position Summary

We are seeking a California-licensed Attorney based in the Bay Area to join our team as an independent contractor and handle civil litigation matters with a particular emphasis on contract and real estate matters. The ideal candidate has strong experience in California state-court litigation, is comfortable managing cases independently, and can work closely with partners and staff in a small-firm setting.

Key Responsibilities

Civil Litigation (California State Courts โ€“ Bay Area)

  • Manage cases from intake through trial, with a focus on business, contract, property, and related civil disputes in Bay Area superior courts.
  • Draft pleadings, demurrers, motions, oppositions, discovery, meet-and-confer correspondence, and settlement materials under the California Code of Civil Procedure and applicable local rules.
  • Conduct depositions, mediations, mandatory settlement conferences, hearings, and other court appearances, both remote and in person as required.
  • Support trial preparation, witness coordination, exhibit management, and courtroom proceedings.

Contract (Transactions & Disputes)

  • Analyze, draft, and revise contracts, settlement agreements, demand letters, and related business documents.
  • Handle breach of contract matters, business tort claims, indemnity issues, and related pre-litigation or litigation strategy.
  • Advise on contract interpretation, risk exposure, and practical resolution options.

Real Estate (Bay Area Residential & Commercial)

  • Handle disputes involving purchase and sale agreements, lease interpretation, easements, boundary and title issues, disclosure claims, and other real property matters.
  • Draft and review real estate-related agreements, notices, and correspondence.
  • Navigate local and state regulatory issues affecting Bay Area real estate disputes, including landlord-tenant issues when they intersect with broader civil litigation.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active California Bar membership in good standing.
  • 5โ€“10 years of relevant experience; experience across multiple listed practice areas is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with the local procedures, filing systems, and court cultures of Bay Area superior courts.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent client-management and communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage a diverse caseload and work efficiently in a small-firm environment.
  • Experience with courtroom appearances, settlement conferences, and probate examiner interactions preferred.

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience.
  • A collegial, flexible, and supportive work environment.
  • Significant attorney autonomy with opportunities for professional growth.
