What Does a Content Reviewer Do?

Content reviewers review, edit, and proofread online or printed content. Before a company can publish content, such as ads, email templates, written text, and other online information, a content reviewer is in charge of ensuring that the material is accurate, high-quality, free of errors, and appropriate for the intended audience. You work closely with content writers and editors, and your review may be the final step before the text is published. As a content reviewer, you may work in the office setting or remotely, and may be on the staff or work freelance on a short- or long-term contract basis.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by Content Reviewers, and how can they effectively address them?

Content Reviewers often encounter challenges such as handling large volumes of user-generated content, making quick yet accurate decisions, and dealing with sensitive or disturbing material. To manage these challenges, it's important to develop strong attention to detail, stay updated on platform policies, and utilize support resources provided by the employer. Many organizations also offer training and mental health support to help reviewers maintain well-being and high performance in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Content Reviewer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Content Reviewer, you need strong attention to detail, excellent language proficiency, and familiarity with content guidelines, often supported by a relevant degree or experience in communications or linguistics. Proficiency with content management systems (CMS), moderation platforms, and workflow tracking tools is typically required. Critical thinking, cultural awareness, and effective communication are key soft skills that help navigate complex content decisions and provide constructive feedback. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure content accuracy, brand consistency, and compliance with legal and community standards.

We create innovative products and experiences that inspire fans, entertain audiences and develop children through play. Mattel is at its best when every member of our team feels respected, included, and heard-when everyone can show up as themselves and do their best work every day. We value and share an infinite range of ideas and voices that evolve and broaden our perspectives with a reach that extends into all our brands, partners, and suppliers.

Job Description

The Opportunity:

Mattel is seeking a motivated, passionate, collaborative, and driven Standards and Practices ("S&P") Associate to review and advise on Mattel TV Studio productions, books, mobile apps and games, and/or other entertainment properties produced by other divisions at Mattel from an S&P perspective, and to assist with product and brand advertising and marketing from a legal perspective.

The ideal candidate will have direct experience in standards and practices, content review, legal, or a related field, and will be eager to learn while building strong working relationships with internal partners. This role operates in a fast-paced environment with evolving technology, regulatory considerations, and tight deadlines.

This role reports into the Marketing, Advertising, and Content Review Legal Team, and will work closely with other divisions within the Legal Department.

What Your Impact Will Be:

  • Review and advise on entertainment content across the Mattel portfolio (e.g., short-form/digital content, episodic programming, feature-length films, mobile apps and games, editorials and other publishing properties, and products and partnerships), and advertising and marketing of such properties, to help ensure alignment with company standards, practices, and policies, as well as industry best practices and internal standards.  Responsibilities include:
    • Reviewing of scripts, storyboards, animatics, cuts, etc., as assigned
    • Conducting research related to third party intellectual property and personal rights issues, as needed.
    • Supporting the tracking and organization of clearance reports from third party clearance vendor(s), and helping flag potential issues.
    • Identifying intellectual property concerns and escalating to senior team members as appropriate.
    • Assisting with stock footage and image library agreements, including reviewing standard terms.
    • Preparing summaries, reports, and status updates for the team.
    • Partnering with the Advertising and Marketing Legal Team to help confirm marketing materials meet requirements.
    • Performing regular analyses of the competitive landscape.
    • Keeping up with trends across the industry.
  • Review advertising and marketing materials for a designated group of brands to help ensure compliance with applicable laws and guidelines (e.g., advertising and marketing laws, COPPA, and relevant self-regulatory frameworks such as CARU), as well as company policies and industry best practices. Scope of work will be limited and performed under guidance, and may include:
    • Assisting with the review of select advertising assets, marketing campaigns, and promotions (e.g., packaging, television commercials, digital ads, influencer content, sweepstakes/contests/giveaways, branded websites, and in-store signage) for assigned brands
  • Communicate regularly with internal teams, colleagues, and supervising attorneys, with occasional exposure to outside counsel.
  • Manage multiple assignments with guidance, responding to day-to-day questions and escalating more complex issues when needed
  • Assist in maintaining legal/compliance resources and databases (e.g., guidelines, internal documentation).
  • Support the development of training materials and internal resources.
  • Participate in internal trainings and team initiatives.
  • Contribute to special projects, research assignments, and process improvements as directed.
Qualifications

What We're Looking For:

  • BA/BS degree required.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience or internship experience in standards & practices, legal, media, compliance, or a related field preferred.
  • Must have the ability to:
    • Conduct research and apply guidelines with attention to detail
    • Identify potential issues and escalate appropriately
    • Manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
    • Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing
    • Work collaboratively while also taking initiative on assigned tasks
    • Stay organized and detail-oriented when reviewing content and documentation
    • Demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to learn
    • Candidate should possess the ability to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, and time-sensitive environment, and be able to exercise independent judgment when advising on a wide range of issues affecting key initiatives across the Mattel portfolio of brands.
  • Interest in entertainment, media, children's content, and/or intellectual property is a plus.
  • Familiarity with content standards, media production, or legal concepts (through coursework, internships, or early career experience) is preferred but not required.

*The pay range is indicative of projected hiring range, however base pay will be determined based on a candidate's work location, skills and experience. Mattel offers competitive total pay programs, comprehensive benefits, and resources to help empower a culture where every employee can reach their full potential.
