Job description

Job Goals:
The primary goal of the program assistant is to work with the classroom teacher in carrying out the instructional program for students in alignment with student IEPs. The Community-Based Program Assistant travels with teacher to provide students with transition and homebound services in home and community settings.

Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma required.
Skills:
  • Interest and ability to work with post-secondary (18-26 year old) students with a variety of abilities and disabilities.
  • Interest and ability to work with students pre-school through adulthood requiring homebound/hospitalization services.
  • Understanding/demonstration of positive behavioral support systems and processes.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to have a growth mindset.
  • Ability to remain objective, calm and neutral in a variety of situations.
  • Direct support and supervision of students who may demonstrate challenging, complex behavior.
  • Assist teacher with the planning and implementation of instructional activities in community and home settings.
  • Participate in the Key Identified Personnel team to assist in crisis situations.
  • General professional skills, including a willingness to:
    • Make student-centered decisions.
    • Assume positive intentions when working with others.
    • Adhere to federal, state and VBISD policies and procedures.
    • Model VBISD guidelines: Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence.
    • Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon timelines.
    • Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and the Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  2. Ability to travel across Van Buren County to provide instructional services in a variety of locations (mileage reimbursement).
  3. Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods as needed for student activities.

Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
