Job Description Summary
The School of Communication Student Peer Advisor will support the School of Communication Academic Advisors. They will follow and enforce all Chapman University and Academic Advising office policies, principles, and guidelines when working with undergraduate students in the School of Communication. They will assist the School of Communication Academic Advisors with undergraduate student meetings and communication.

  • Supports academic advisors by promptly answering undergraduate student questions via email daily and during scheduled appointments several times a week.
  • Communicates academic policies and provides guidance to students.
  • Understands and communicates the implications of the program plan and degree progress, and particularly the impact of changing academic plans to these goals.
  • Understands, interprets, and enforces University policies while exploring academic and professional options with students.
  • Advises all School of Communication majors and minors, communicating relevant information and working closely with academic advisors to provide additional support.
  • Aids in retention of undergraduate students from first-year to graduation; regularly advising on academic policies and procedures, scheduling, four-year plans, degree requirements, and academic possibilities (majors, minors, and appropriate electives).
  • Helps guide students in their academic success, personal development, and connection to the Chapman community.
  • Serves as a role model, resource, and source of support for students, providing information on accessing University resources and campus agencies to assist with personal problems and/or crisis management as necessary.
  • Actively seeks out and meets the needs of peers pertaining to the School of Communication during drop-in hours and peak times.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date student records to ensure efficient advising and tracking of progress.
  • Collaborates with faculty and academic advisors to keep student communications efficiently organized and promptly answered.
  • Other duties as assigned.
