Purpose Of Position
The Circulation Technician provides excellent customer service while performing the daily circulation functions of the library. This position assists patrons with borrowing and returning library materials, registering library accounts, resolving routine account issues, and providing general information about library services. The Circulation Technician helps maintain accurate circulation records and contributes to an efficient, welcoming, and patron-focused library environment.
Essential Functions
  • Provides exceptional customer service to library patrons in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Assists patrons with checking materials in and out, renewals, holds, library card registration, account inquiries, and payment of fees.
  • Resolves routine patron concerns and refers complex issues to the supervisor or Circulation Coordinator.
  • Interprets and explains library policies, procedures, and services.
  • Accurately processes library materials, including check-in, check-out, renewals, holds, and fine collection.
  • Retrieves library materials from remote book drop and other designated return locations using a City vehicle, as assigned, and ensures material returns are processed in accordance with library procedures.
  • Shelves, organizes, and retrieves library materials to maintain an orderly collection.
  • Assists with maintaining accurate circulation records and statistics.
  • Informs library patrons of rules of conduct as necessary and refers difficult situations to the appropriate staff member.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patron records in accordance with applicable laws and library policy.
  • Assists with library opening and closing procedures.
  • Supports the information desk by assisting patrons with basic directional and service questions.
  • Assists with maintaining an orderly, safe, and welcoming public service environment.
  • Performs routine equipment checks for self-check stations and other circulation equipment and reports issues as needed.
  • Assist patrons with locating materials, using computers, or explaining procedures (checking out, logging onto the Internet, making copies, etc.)
  • Provides information regarding programs, events, conference rooms, etc.
  • Follows all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Push and pull fully loaded book carts.
  • Performs repetitive hand and wrist movements while operating computers and handling library materials.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent. One year of customer service experience required; public library or cash-handling experience preferred. Experience of working with the public in a fast-paced environment preferred. Must possess a valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License with a clear driving record.
