Job description

Building Inspector

Performs technical work enforcing the Florida Building Code under the general supervision of the Chief Building Inspector.

Duties and Responsibilities

All duties of Field Inspector I and II, plus the following:

  • Assists the Chief Building Safety Inspector in enforcing Special Magistrate cases, Unsafe Structures cases, and the Building Safety Inspection Program.
  • Performs investigative research and field inspections for conformance with the Broward County Administrative Code Ch. 116 and determine if a building or structure is uninhabitable or unsafe.
  • Performs assigned work, provides technical advice and assistance, and evaluates work associated with a permit to satisfy a violation.
  • Represents the Building Inspections Division at the Unsafe Structures and Special Magistrate meetings.
  • Ensures the Building Safety Inspections Program is being adhered to.
  • Performs review of legal documents, proceedings, submitted plans, and specifications.
  • Maintains all records related to Special Magistrate and Unsafe Structure cases.
  • Performs after-hours and emergency inspections when requested by BSO and PBFD.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Construction, Construction Management, or related field preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of combined construction experience, including:
    • 3 years supervisory capacity
    • 2 years in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ).
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver presentations and speak effectively in public settings.
  • Experience with building inspections, code enforcement, and plan review preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, delegate, and review the work of others.
  • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Certifiable by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals as outlined in Chapter 1, Section 104 of the Broward County amendments to the Florida Building Code.
  • Certifiable by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board:
    • Standard Inspector (within 1 year of hire)
    • Plans Examiner (within 2 years of hire)
  • Must be a licensed Design Professional or Certified Contractor
  • Must obtain F.A.C.E (Florida Association of Code Enforcement) Levels IIV certification within two (2) years of hire.
  • Ability to obtain FEMA NIMS certification up to G-400 level.

  • Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Effective code enforcement with sound judgment, professionalism, and fairness.

  • Proficiency in software systems, recordkeeping, and basic calculations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform field inspections, including walking, standing, bending, and climbing.
  • Capability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to respond to emergency and post-disaster situations when required.
