City Electrical Inspector Jobs (NOW HIRING)

General Description ONE CURRENT VACANCY. 35 HOURS PER WEEK POSITION Under general supervision, performs routine to complex inspections of residential and commercial building construction and renovations for compliance with applicable building electrical and related codes and ordinances. Work involves performing electrical safety inspections in accordance with National Electrical Code and the Amendments by the City Council on residential and commercial applications that have been pre-scheduled by the Licensed Electrician; remaining on call twenty-four hours for emergency inspections; maintaining knowledge of both the National Electrical Code and the Amendments to testify in court for the City of Kenner; communicating and interacting with hostile situations, animal attacks, abusive speech and law enforcement issues; recording the results of each inspection; using a handheld radio; operating and maintaining an assigned vehicle; scheduling inspection routes for other Electrical Inspectors; and maintaining a working relationship with the commercial power supplies and the surrounding Parishes Electrical Safety Departments.

Reports to the Assistant Director. Duties of Responsibilities ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs commercial and residential inspections in accordance with established policies and procedures. Performs emergency electrical inspections due to fires or structural damages twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Ensures all residences are not in danger from power lines or internal electrical lines in an emergency disaster status. Testifies in court to unsafe and correct electrical installations. Reviews electrical drawings for permit approval.

Serves as a liaison between the City of Kenner and the commercial power supplier. Researches design; inspects City electrical projects. Inspects all swimming pool installations above or in ground for digging and operation safety.

Serves as a liaison between the City of Kenner and the surrounding Parishes. Issues court summons to those who have unsafe electrical conditions. Answers the telephone and questions from electricians, homeowners, lawyers, engineers, contractors, and supervisors.

Schedules and prepares field routes for other Inspectors. Meets with the public to settle electrical differences, problems, unsafe conditions, and answer questions. Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as National Electrical Code, commercial power supplier standards, and amendments to the code by the City Council.

Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as Electrical Safety Permit applications, court summons book, warning violation book, and vehicle maintenance sheet. Refers to electrical safety permit application, route records book, court dockets, policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc. Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment and machinery such as heavy equipment, computer, copy machine, etc.

Uses a variety of tool such as insulated measuring stick, high and low voltage hand tools, radio, etc.; a variety of supplies such as writing instruments, paper, general office supplies, etc.; and a variety of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Assistant Director, licensed electricians, engineers, judges, and the general public. Performs related duties as required

May be required to report to work during emergency situations, including, but not limited to, city-wide declared emergencies. Minimum Qualifications Requires a valid high school diploma or equivalency certificate and three (3) years of experience in electrical inspection or construction; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid certificate of registration for residential and/or commercial electrical inspection and be registered with the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council or be willing to become certified within 12 months of hire.
