DUTIES An Electrical Inspector inspects new, existing and modified electrical installations to secure conformance to electrical laws, ordinances and safety provisions; inspects electrical work in public buildings to assure conformance to City plans, specifications, and standards; and assists in training other inspectional employees as required. REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S) Two years of full-time paid experience as an electrical inspector with work in residential, commercial, or industrial electrical installations; or Successful completion of a State of California approved electrical apprenticeship program and two years of full-time paid electrical experience with work in residential, commercial, or industrial electrical installations; or Six years of full-time paid electrical experience with work in residential, commercial, or industrial electrical installations. PROCESS NOTES Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination.
However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met or the apprenticeship has been completed. Applicants filing under Requirement #2 must submit a certificate from a valid State of California approved electrical apprenticeship program. Applicants must attach a copy of this certificate to the on-line application at the time of filing.
The certificate must be attached to the on-line application BEFORE the application is submitted. If the certificate is attached AFTER the on-line application has been submitted, it will not be available to the City and applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted the certificate. Applicants who fail to submit the certificate at the time of filling by attaching it to the on-line application will not be considered further in this examination.
As a condition of employment, a valid Class C driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of appointment. Applicants will be disqualified or deemed ineligible for hire if their DMV record reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation within the last 36 months in any state or jurisdiction. The City of Los Angeles reserves the right to issue a notice of disqualification or ineligibility at any time before a final job offer is extended.
Upon appointment, an Electrical Inspector will be required to furnish an automobile, properly insured, for use in City service. Mileage will be paid according to established rates. International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Commercial Electrical Inspector is required within 24 months of hire.

In the on-line multiple-choice test, the following competencies may be evaluated: Reading Comprehension; Judgement and Decision Making; Interpersonal Skills; Written Communication; Teamwork; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: departmental policies and procedures related to electrical safety and hazardous electrical conditions necessary to recognize and evaluate unsafe installations, including substandard wiring or other conditions that may present an immediate threat to life or property; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: National Electrical Code applicable to electrical work; various types of electrical services, systems, and equipment, such as their uses, functions, and construction, including accepted wiring methods currently in use; listing requirements of electrical equipment sufficient to recognize acceptable uses and installation of equipment; basic electrical theory and principles, and basic arithmetic and algebraic calculations; the physical layout of an assigned district and map reading, such as street maps and floor plans; and other necessary skills, knowledge and abilities

The multiple-choice test will be proctored and administered on-line during a single session. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test from a remote location (i.e., their home) using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection
Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the multiple-choice test on-line. It is anticipated that the remote proctored multiple-choice test will be administered between TUESDAY, AUGUST 04, 2026 and MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 2026. Candidates who do not complete and submit the remote proctored multiple-choice test on-line using a computer by the specified date and time will not be considered further in this examination.

Candidates in the examination process may file protests as provided in Sec. 4.20, 4.22 and 4.23 as applicable and within the required time frame; however, the Personnel Department may respond to and resolve protests prior to the establishment of the eligible list.
