What is a benefits specialist?

Benefits specialists are human resources professionals who manage employee benefits programs within organizations. They are responsible for administering health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and other employee perks. Their job includes communicating benefits options to employees, ensuring compliance with laws, handling enrollment, and resolving issues related to benefits. Benefits specialists play a key role in attracting and retaining talent by designing competitive benefits packages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a benefits specialist?

To thrive as a Benefits Specialist, you need expertise in employee benefits administration, knowledge of relevant laws (such as ERISA and ACA), and usually a bachelor's degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with HR information systems (HRIS), benefits management software, and certifications like CEBS (Certified Employee Benefit Specialist) are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills help you effectively manage programs and support employees. These skills ensure compliance, accurate administration, and employee satisfaction, which are crucial for organizational success.

What are some common challenges benefits specialists face when managing employee benefits programs?

Benefits Specialists often encounter challenges such as keeping up with constantly changing regulations, balancing cost-effectiveness with employee satisfaction, and ensuring accurate and timely communication of benefits information to employees. Additionally, they must coordinate with multiple vendors and departments, address individual employee concerns, and manage open enrollment periods, which can be particularly demanding. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong organizational skills, up-to-date knowledge of benefits laws, and effective communication abilities.

Job description

Account Manager, Employee Benefits
Envision Benefits Group Buffalo, NY Full-Time
If you know your way around a benefits renewal, love building client relationships, and want to work somewhere that actually invests in its people, this is worth reading.
Envision Benefits Group is a fast-growing HR consulting and employee benefits brokerage firm headquartered in Buffalo, NY. We serve employers across all 50 states and have built our reputation on sharp strategy, straight talk, and service that keeps clients coming back. We are a NYS and Erie County Women Business Enterprise (WBE) certified firm, and we are proud of the team we have built.
We are looking for an Account Manager who is ready to own a book of business, build lasting client relationships, and grow alongside us.
What You Will Do
You will serve as the primary point of contact for a portfolio of employer clients, guiding them through annual renewals, open enrollment, carrier negotiations, and everything that comes up in between. You will partner with our HR team to make sure clients always know what is happening and always feel taken care of.
Day to day, that looks like managing benefits program timelines, reviewing plan options, building technology, coordinating and managing carrier proposals, presenting renewal strategies, coordinating open enrollment materials, and answering the client questions that come in at 4:45 on a Friday. This role is based out of our Buffalo office, working alongside a team that knows what they are doing and genuinely enjoys the work.
Requirements
What We Are Looking For
- 3 to 5 years of experience as an Account Manager within the group employee benefits industry
- Life, Accident and Health license required
- Comfortable presenting to groups of people
- Comfortable with technology and strong technical aptitude (familiarity with EASE and Employee Navigator a plus)
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office
- High attention to detail, organizational excellence, and a client-first mindset
- Willingness to travel as needed
Compensation and Benefits
Base salary of $80,000 to $95,000, depending on experience. Bring in new business? You will earn commission on those accounts as we want you to grow with us and we will reward you for it.
Additional benefits include:
- Medical insurance with single-tier coverage fully paid by Envision Benefits Group
- Dental and vision coverage
- Paid life insurance
- Other ancillary benefits
- Paid time off and holidays
- Retirement plan with employer match
About Envision Benefits Group

Our clients range from small businesses to large employers, and they count on us for the kind of guidance that used to take three different vendors and twice the budget. We are certified as a Women Business Enterprise in both New York State and Erie County, and we are proud of the culture and reputation we have built.
If you are looking for a role where your work matters, your clients know your name, and there is real room to grow, then we would love to hear from you.
