Highlights of the job
We are hiring a Full-Time, Temporary (up to 18 months) Engineer, Planning position working out of EPCOR Tower in Edmonton, AB.
The Engineer, Planning is responsible for maintaining, updating, and calibrating hydraulic models used to support water system planning, as well as providing technical guidance and training to model users. The role leads pipe network planning and planning investigations associated with Transmission Master Plan (TMP) initiatives, ensuring the successful delivery of objectives and outcomes within planning horizons ranging from 3 to 12 months. Reporting to the Manager, Water Pipe Strategies and operating within the framework established by the Associate Director, Linear Asset Strategies, the Engineer, Planning applies technical expertise to support long-term infrastructure planning, system performance analysis, and strategic decision-making.

What you’d be responsible for
- Provide input into the development and direction of potable water network growth plans while maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders.
- Build, maintain, calibrate, and authenticate hydraulic models, including creating and signing off on Professional Work Products (PWPs).
- Lead hydraulic model training and provide technical guidance and support to model users.
- Oversee hydraulic model licensing and coordinate software updates with IT and users.
- Lead the development of water boundary conditions and authenticate boundary conditions prepared for external consultants.
- Review and assess hydraulic network analyses completed by external consultants, as required.
- Conduct hydraulic analyses to support planning initiatives and other operational needs.
- Lead the development of master planning documents associated with Transmission Master Plan (TMP) initiatives.
- Present and communicate complex hydraulic analysis findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Demonstrate a high-performance, safety-focused, accountable, innovative, and customer-oriented approach to work.
- Lead projects through the Capital Delivery Model (CDM) process.
- Provide technical insight and support for the Long-Term Plan.
- Prepare project documentation, including Project Prioritization Reports (PPRs) and Capital Project Justification Summaries (CPJSs), as required.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
What’s required to be successful
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Civil/Environmental Engineering or Chemical Engineering is preferred.
- A Professional Designation:
- Certified Professional Engineer (P. Eng) with APEGA or eligible for registration with APEGA,
- Professional Licensee (P.L.) designation, or
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) candidates registered with APEGA will be considered and may be hired at a level commensurate with their qualifications and experience.
Experience
- 3 + years experience in hydraulic model, network planning and pipe design experience.
Knowledge/Technical Skills
- Clear and concise report writing.
- Critical thinking to support strategic planning tasks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to simplify and present complex concepts in a clear and concise manner, to a variety of internal and external stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
- Capacity to research a wide array of topics and ability to synthesize into actions/strategies.
- Ability to think out of the box and offer new approaches and design recommendations to improve efficiency and reduce cost.
- Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing conditions, and be flexible to respond to a wide variety of issues that could arise within this position’s scope and responsibility.
- Ability to utilize hydraulic modeling software such as Synergi Water and Mike Urban.
- Experience in Graphical Information System (GIS) software and tools, Microsoft SharePoint, and Microsoft Office.
