Job description

Since 1984, Share Our Strengthยฎ has led the fight against hunger and poverty by inspiring and organizing individuals and businesses to share their strengths. Today, through the No Kid Hungry campaign, Share Our Strength is ending childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need. No child should go hungry in America โ€“ weโ€™re on our way to making that a reality and we want you to join us. Weโ€™re bold, creative, always open to new ideas, and 100% dedicated to our mission. If that sounds like you, weโ€™d like you to consider becoming part of our team.

The Associate, Community Engagement leads the organization's social media community engagement strategy, transforming digital platforms into active spaces for dialogue, trust-building, support, and mobilization. This is a mission-critical, high-visibility role that sits at the intersection of brand reputation, audience relationships, and movement building. It requires real-time strategic judgment, cross-functional coordination, and a deep understanding of how online communities interact with organizational priorities.

This role goes beyond solely inbound strategy and engagementโ€“this position also plays a meaningful part in how our brand shows up visually and in-person. The Associate, Community Engagement may serve as a brand voice on camera for social content, representing the organization's personality in authentic, community-centered ways, and may support content creation alongside the broader social media team.

This position is preferably based in Washington, DC; but could be fully remote for the right candidate. The position offers a salary range of $65k-$73k. Exact compensation within the stated salary range may vary based on skills, experience, internal equity, and geographical location. Occasional travel may be required for event coverage and organizational convenings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Engagement

  • Lead proactive engagement (also known as comments-as-creative) strategies positioning the organization within high-visibility conversations and reinforcing issue authority at scale.
  • Oversee real-time audience interaction across all social platforms, including monitoring and responding to inbound comments and direct messages at scale.
  • Coordinate with the community engagement team through our vendor to ensure consistent cross-channel reactive community management.

On-Camera Presence & Event Content Support

  • Serve as an on-camera brand voice for social content where appropriate, participating in short-form video, behind-the-scenes coverage, or community-centered storytelling that reflects the organization's authentic personality.

Audience Insights & Reporting

  • Analyze audience sentiment around issue areas and translate insights into actionable messaging approaches and campaign recommendations for communications, fundraising, and program teams.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree preferred but not required, or equivalent professional and work experience.
  • 2-3 years of experience in social media content creation or account management with demonstrated progression in scope and responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience managing community engagement at scale, including high-volume inbound comment and DM management across multiple platforms.
  • Strong strategic judgment with the ability to make independent, real-time decisions in high-visibility and sensitive situations without escalation.
  • Experience with proactive / comments-as-creative social engagement strategies.
  • Comfortable appearing on camera in authentic, unscripted or semi-produced social video formats; experience as an on-camera talent or creator is a plus.
  • Experience supporting live event social coverage is valued.
  • Proficiency with social media management platforms (Sprout Social preferred), social listening tools, and community moderation workflows.
  • Deep knowledge of platform dynamics across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, and Threads โ€” including algorithmic signals, community norms, and risk management.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, with the ability to navigate complex, sensitive, and sometimes adversarial public interactions with grace.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to adapt voice and tone rapidly across contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally, build internal relationships, and serve as a connector between teams and audiences.
  • Familiarity with issue advocacy and political campaign experience is valued.
  • Genuine commitment to anti-hunger, anti-poverty, and equity-centered work..

COMPREHENSIVE BENEFIT PLAN:
We offer a comprehensive benefits plan which currently includes, but is not limited to, health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, retirement, wellness benefits, and paid time off (vacation leave, sick leave, personal leave, holiday, parental leave, bereavement leave, military leave, and jury duty leave).
EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT:
Share Our Strength is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, disability, medical condition, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, military status, age, or any other classification protected by law.
