Position Overview

Norfolk Iron & Metal is seeking a motivated, dependable, and detail-oriented Assistant Supervisor to support our Operations Supervisors in leading daily warehouse operations. This position plays a key role in maintaining a safe, productive, and efficient work environment while ensuring operational goals are met.

The Assistant Supervisor provides leadership and guidance to warehouse team members and serves as the acting supervisor when Operations Supervisors are unavailable, helping to ensure continuity of operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Operations Supervisors in coordinating daily warehouse operations, workflow, and inventory movement.

  • Lead and coach warehouse team members while promoting a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability.

  • Assume supervisory responsibilities and make operational decisions in the absence of the Operations Supervisors.

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety procedures, and operational standards.

  • Assist with employee training, onboarding, and ongoing development.

  • Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure timely and accurate order fulfillment.

  • Monitor productivity and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and operational performance.

  • Assist in resolving operational issues while maintaining a positive and professional work environment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support business operations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Internal Candidates: Minimum of one (1) year of warehouse experience with Norfolk Iron & Metal and a demonstrated commitment to safety, teamwork, and performance.

  • External Candidates: Minimum of two (2) years of warehouse, manufacturing, or distribution leadership experience.

  • Proven leadership ability with the skills to motivate, coach, and develop others.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Working knowledge of warehouse operations, inventory control, and safety practices.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, make sound decisions, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Flexibility to work varying shifts based on operational needs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current forklift certification and experience operating industrial forklifts.

  • Experience operating overhead cranes in a warehouse or manufacturing environment.

  • Experience using an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system or warehouse management software.

  • Completion of supervisory or leadership training, or a demonstrated history of successful team leadership.

  • Experience with continuous improvement initiatives, workflow optimization, or Lean manufacturing principles.
