SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

The Sawmill Assistant Supervisor is a management support role that is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations for all Sawmill employees and productivity in these areas and leads the safety, quality, and production executing any company plan of action with the assistance of the Sawmill Supervisor. The Sawmill Assistant Supervisor leads employees in producing quality lumber products in a safe and efficient environment while maintaining productivity, minimizing operational costs, and helping develop a well-trained workforce. This role requires the ability to balance both leadership and support responsibilities and frequently involves taking a hands-on approach in daily operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in motivating, developing, and directing employees as they work
  • Assist supervisor with ensuring safety of all employees by supporting safety education efforts and enforcement of safety rules including LOTO training and documenting of all authorized personnel
  • Assist with reading and analyzing charts, work orders, production schedules, and other records and reports, in order to determine production requirements and to evaluate current production estimates and outputs
  • Assist with monitoring and advise on regulations associated with safety and environmental systems
  • Assist with monitoring daily sawmill operations to ensure production goals, safety standards, and quality expectations are met.
  • Assist supervisor with planning and establish work schedules, assignments, and production sequences to meet production goals
  • Assist supervisor with workplace practice audits and standardization, including daily quality audits and quality testing
  • Inspect materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions
  • Demonstrate equipment operations, work, and safety procedures to new employees, and/or assign new employees to experienced workers for training
  • Assist supervisor with training and certifying of forklift operators
  • Monitor equipment, gauges, dials, and operational indicators to ensure machinery and operators are functioning properly and meeting processing standards.
  • Assist supervisor to consistently meet goals and accountability for expenses in your department
  • Monitor/participate in action planning process
  • Enforce company disciplinary policies and procedures
  • Perform and document performance counselling in accordance with company policy and as needed to identify deficiencies and accomplishments
  • Assist supervisor with monitoring and addressing work hours (overtime) on a daily/weekly basis
  • Confer with supervisor, management and/or subordinates to resolve worker problems and complaints
  • Assist supervisor with conducting regular crew meetings
  • Attend/conduct other meetings as needed
  • Confer with other supervisors to coordinate operations and activities within or between departments
  • Assist supervisor when working with Human Resources on placement and job placement of personnel
  • Support the operation and maintenance of sawmill machinery and equipment, including forklifts, conveyors, saw systems, and yard equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support sawmill operations.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous management experience or equivalent education
  • Working knowledge of lumber manufacturing processes and sawmill operations
  • Computer literate
  • Problem solving skills
  • Working knowledge of sawmill equipment, machinery, and tools, including their design, operation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ability to clearly & effectively communicate issues to peers, subordinates & senior management
  • Ability to lead and work well with other supervisors & operators
  • Work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to train others on operation of equipment
  • Ability to monitor/assess performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action
  • Ability to effectively manage one's own time and the time of others

SAFETY

  • Follow all area/machine center specific safety regulations
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment: hardhat, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc…as required
  • Do not enter restricted areas
  • Immediately remedy unsafe conditions, investigate, take appropriate actions/next steps and report to Human Resources/Safety Manager
  • Request assistance when a task exceeds individual knowledge
  • Visually inspect equipment and area before starting/operating
  • Eliminate unsafe conditions as soon as possible
  • Use Standard Lockout Procedures when appropriate for machine centers
  • Use proper lifting technique by pushing, pulling and lifting with your legs and not your back
  • Follow all other safety regulations as set forth by the company
