Job Description The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in downtown Eau Claire, Wisconsin is proud of its mission to promote lifelong learning, create collaborative spaces, and support open access to diverse materials and resources. We're looking for someone to join our Library team in creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for library customers and staff

The Security Monitor plays a key role in maintaining security throughout the library and grounds, responding to incidents and emergencies, monitoring facility activity, and enforcing library policies with professionalism and compassion. Throughout the day, you'll maintain a visible presence, monitor security cameras, greet customers, answer questions, and provide support and training to library staff. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working with people and can remain calm under pressure, has strong observation, decision-making, and problem solving skills.

This position requires strong customer service, communication, and deescalation skills, along with the ability to work collaboratively with staff and community partners. Bilingual candidates, especially those who speak HMoob (Hmong), Spanish, or other high-needs languages are encouraged to apply. This is a full time, non-exempt position, 40 hours per week.

The starting wage is $25.95 per hour. The proposed schedule includes primarily daytime hours, with occasional evening and weekend shifts when needed. Please submit a cover letter, along with your application, by 8:00 a.m

The security monitor actively engages with visitors and staff to create a welcoming and respectful environment and ensure compliance with the library's rules of behavior

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Relevant Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Course work in criminal justice or related field preferred. Customer service experience preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS The requirements listed below are representative of the qualities, knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to work effectively with customers of all ages. Positive attitude and a willingness to work in a flexible environment with quickly changing tasks and priorities.

Ability and initiative to work independently with minimal direction and thrive in challenging situations. Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines. Ability to work accurately with attention to detail.

Ability to efficiently operate a variety of office and library equipment. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft 365. Ability to interpret, communicate and enforce library policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following are the regular duties for this position. These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Maintains an alert and visible presence by regularly monitoring all areas of building and grounds. Responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly public space within the library building and grounds. Contributes to a positive, team-oriented work environment by being helpful, respectful, and approachable to both staff and the public.

Explains rules and procedures to customers to solicit cooperation and compliance. Balance security authority with keeping the public building friendly and welcoming. Responds to staff calls for assistance, emergencies, and incidents promptly.

Advises customers of inappropriate behaviors that may lead to loss of privileges in a proactive and compassionate manner. Responds to security or emergency situations directly or by contacting appropriate staff, law enforcement, or other emergency personnel as necessary. Routinely monitors the library's video cameras.

Creatively solves problems, negotiates and handles stressful situations in a positive and respectful manner. Greets customers, provides directional assistance, and serves as backup for service desks and programs. Writes detailed incident reports and helps to maintain the Library incident database.

Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance. Develop staff training on incident response and procedures; provide input on library behavior policies and safety procedures. Assist with planning and coordinating safety drills and emergency response exercises.

Collaborates with City and community partners to connect library customers with available resources. NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following are nonessential functions for this position. Other duties may be assigned.

Performs related duties as required. Serves on staff committees. WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS Daily work is primarily performed in Library facilities and surrounding outdoor areas.

May be exposed to individuals who are upset, angry or demanding. Visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard, two-way radio, and basic office equipment. Duties require moderate physical exercise including sustained periods of walking and standing.

Subject to sitting, walking, standing, reaching, twisting and handling to perform the essential job functions. Includes lifting/carrying 10 to 30 lbs. frequently.
