What are Assistant Apparel Designers?

Assistant Apparel Designers support the design team in creating clothing collections by preparing sketches, sourcing fabrics, organizing samples, and coordinating with manufacturers. They help turn creative concepts into finished garments by assisting in the design process, tracking trends, and handling administrative tasks. This entry-level role is ideal for those looking to build a career in the fashion industry and gain hands-on experience in apparel creation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Apparel Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Apparel Designer, you need a strong understanding of fashion design principles, garment construction, and proficiency in sketching, often supported by a relevant degree in fashion or design. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD systems, as well as knowledge of fabric sourcing, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively with design teams and interpret trends. These skills are crucial for supporting the design process, ensuring product quality, and contributing innovative ideas in a competitive fashion industry.

Job description

Join Our Team at Storm Creek!

At Storm Creek, we don't just make clothes, we make clothes that do good. Women-owned, B-Corp certified, and sustainably made, we blend style, performance, and purpose. Over 5% of our profits go straight back into environmental and community causes, and we're racing toward $5 million in charitable contributions by 2030.

We're innovators, collaborators, and relentless doers. "Good enough" isn't in our dictionary- we aim higher, think sharper, and make impact look effortless. Named one of PPAI's Greatest Companies to Work For in 2024 & 2025, ranked #33 on the PPAI 100, and a proud member of Minnesota Keystone at the 5% giving level, we're making waves in apparel, sustainability, and culture.

We're looking for a killer Apparel Designer; someone who can take sustainable, high-performance fabrics and turn them into must-have lifestyle pieces that look amazing and feel even better. If you live for creativity, innovation, and doing good while doing it, you'll fit right in.

As an Apparel Designer at Storm Creek, you'll bring our sustainably made lifestyle apparel to life- from concept to production. You'll combine trend insight, creativity, and sustainable material know-how to design high-performing products that embody our mission and values.

This fast-paced, multi-faceted role touches every stage of the product lifecycle: concepting, design execution, fabric and trim selection, PLM maintenance, fit and quality standardization, and product launches. You balance creative vision with technical precision, ensuring every style meets Storm Creek's standards for fit, function, and sustainability.

You thrive in a dynamic environment, love collaborating across teams, and are obsessed with creating products that look amazing, feel great, and do good.

Key Responsibilities:

Men's & Women's Design from Concept to Approval of Production

  • Research market trends, competitive offerings, and sustainable sourcing methods.
  • Work with team to outline full product line assortment and brand initiatives.
  • Develop innovative concepts and designs that reflect Storm Creek's design standards and business objectives.
  • Continually seek and source new fabrics, trims, and technologies.
  • Lead or assist with all aspects of development including lab dips, fittings, and submits.
  • Manage all product development timelines with exceptional organization and attention to detail.
  • Create detailed, production‑ready tech packs that clearly communicate design intent, construction methods, measurements, materials, and trim details to vendors.
  1. Manage Design Data Across All Platforms
  • Assist with creating and updating PLM with complete and accurate product details.
  • Maintain organized records of tech packs, fabric specs, trims, and approvals.
  • Ensure data accuracy across ERP, PLM, and shared systems.
  • Track changes and revisions throughout the development lifecycle.
  1. Follow Merchandising Calendar and Meet Deadlines
  • Partner with Merchandising to align on seasonal milestones and deliverables.
  • Manage development timelines to ensure on-time submits and production approvals.
  • Proactively communicate risks or delays and propose solutions.
  1. Own Design Standards: Fit, Branding, Sustainability, Styling, Performance
  • Enforce Storm Creek branding guidelines across all apparel categories.
  • Uphold fit standards through consistent measurement review and fittings.
  • Ensure products meet performance and quality expectations.
  • Serve as the sustainable sourcing subject matter expert.
  • Maintain consistency in styling, trims, labeling, and packaging details.
  1. Private Label
  • Develop private label designs aligned with customer requirements while maintaining Storm Creek quality standards.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Product teams to interpret customer needs into executable designs.
  • Manage approvals and revisions with external partners and factories.
  1. QA, Errors, and Factory Communication
  • Effectively communicate internally and externally through all phases of development.
  • Act as cross-departmental liaison to ensure consistent information flow.
  • Review and address QA issues, fit corrections, and production errors.
  • Partner with factories on technical clarifications, corrections, and approvals.
  • Support seasonal product presentations internally and externally.
  • Collaborate with Marketing on development of materials that accurately showcase product features and sustainability stories.
  • Additional duties as required.

Skills & Qualifications

  • College degree in apparel design or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of experience in men's/women's apparel design
  • Full understanding of both creative and technical design
  • Experience designing full collections and complete product cycles from concept to finish
  • Strong understanding of lifestyle, outdoor-inspired apparel trends
  • Material and textile construction and product knowledge
  • Fit experience and understanding
  • Experience and ability to successfully communicate with overseas factories
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Advance software knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Centric/PLM software and Excel; Clo/3D experience is a strong plus
