Some editors fact-check information and suggest improvements to strengthen the overall message. The goal is to produce polished, professional-quality content.

What does an article editor do?

A typical day for an article editor involves reviewing submitted drafts, making corrections for grammar, style, and clarity, and ensuring articles align with publication guidelines. Editors may communicate with writers to give feedback or request revisions, manage editorial calendars, and sometimes coordinate with designers or fact-checkers. The role usually includes juggling multiple assignments simultaneously, prioritizing tasks based on deadlines, and participating in editorial meetings. Collaboration and adaptability are key, as the work environment can be fast-paced and subject to sudden changes in content needs. Familiarity with editing tools such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and content management systems (CMS) is typically required, and certifications from organizations like the American Society of Journalists and Authors can be beneficial. Excellent time management, communication, and collaboration skills help editors manage tight deadlines and work with writers and other team members. These skills ensure articles are accurate, coherent, and engaging, which is essential for maintaining publication quality and reputation.

How to become an article editor?

To become an article editor, you typically need a strong command of language, excellent editing skills, and a relevant degree such as in English, journalism, or communications. Gaining experience through internships or freelance editing work, and becoming proficient with editing tools like Microsoft Word or content management systems, can also improve your prospects. Building a portfolio of edited work and staying updated on style guides like AP or Chicago Manual of Style are beneficial.

Job description

What we're looking for --
We're seeking talented writers who know how to successfully use ChatGPT as a writing tool, not as a writing replacement.
The process is as follows:
1. Research competing articles
2. Develop an outline with ChatGPT
3. Generate the article with ChatGPT
4. Edit for:
  • Structure - Improve the structure, when needed, to meet user intent better and explain concepts more clearly, and in the right order
  • SEO-friendliness - Keywords are used appropriately, and user intent is met
  • Skimmable formatting - Short paragraphs, bullets, numbered lists, etc. where appropriate
  • Expertise explained simply - Expert jargon, where necessary, is included and explained simply
  • Removing GPT voice - GPT is prone to repeating itself, adding fluff and unnecessary words, and overall has several "tells"

5. Add citations - Cite 7-10 facts from reputable sources
This remains a writing process that will likely take 5-6 hours to finalize per article.
Who we're looking for --
  • AI-savvy editors: You know what GPT-generated content looks like, and how to make it sound human.
  • SEO editors: You know what a useful article that meets user intent looks like, and how to achieve it
