Job description

Description
Intercollegiate Media Studies (IMS) at the Claremont Colleges seeks applicants for the William J. Kenan Endowed Chair, at the level of full professor at Scripps College, in Media Industries and Digital Technologies. A Ph.D. or M.F.A. is required by the time of appointment. We seek a scholar or scholar-practitioner researching contemporary media technologies, including machine learning, algorithmic structures, artificial intelligence, programming languages, platforms, digital networks, and moving image technologies.Successful candidates will have a background in media industries, cinema and media arts, critical theory, history of technology, media activism, or related areas.
The Intercollegiate Media Studies Program at the Claremont Colleges has constructed a curriculum that foregrounds the social, political, and aesthetic work of media through a theory-practice approach. The program comprises faculty, students, and facilities from the five undergraduate colleges of the Claremont Consortium: Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Pomona College, and Scripps College.
The Kenan Chair is an all-Claremont professorship to be held by a distinguished professor appointed at Scripps College and serves a consortial purpose of high priority: to provide leadership in undergraduate teaching, program building, and intercollegiate collaboration around their area of expertise. The successful candidate will design undergraduate courses in their areas of specialization at the intermediate/advanced level, with a teaching load of two/two courses per year and will perform service to Scripps Media Studies and the Intercollegiate Media Studies Program. The position is for a Full Professor; Advanced Associates ready for promotion will be considered.
The salary for this position will range from $140,000 to $160,000 and will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. In light of recent federal updates to visa processing and associated costs, the College is generally not in a position to sponsor visas for faculty appointments.
Applicants should submit the following materials on Interfolio: a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and the names of three professional references. The candidate should address their approach to teaching for all students in a liberal arts context and provide an account of their scholarship in the application packet.
For matters other than the submission of materials, contact Professor Carlin Wing at cwing@scrippscollege.edu. Review of applications will begin September 25, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.
