What is the difference between Account Manager Startup vs Account Executive?

AspectAccount Manager StartupAccount Executive
Required CredentialsRelevant experience in client management, sales, or customer service; often a bachelor's degreeSales or marketing background; bachelor's degree often preferred
Work EnvironmentFast-paced startup setting, collaborative teams, flexible rolesSales-driven environment, target-focused, often in corporate or agency settings
Employer & Industry UsageStartups across tech, SaaS, e-commerceSales organizations, tech companies, marketing agencies

While both roles involve client interaction and sales skills, an Account Manager Startup focuses on maintaining and growing existing client relationships within a startup environment. An Account Executive primarily focuses on acquiring new clients and closing sales. The roles overlap in skills but differ in their core responsibilities and work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Account Manager in a startup environment, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Account Manager at a startup, you need strong relationship-building skills, sales acumen, and a background in business or marketing, often evidenced by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, project management platforms, and digital communication systems is typically required. Outstanding adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and effective communication help you stand out in the fast-paced and dynamic startup setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving customer success, managing rapid change, and supporting business growth in a competitive environment.

What are some unique challenges Account Managers face when working at a startup compared to established companies?

Account Managers at startups often encounter a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes and structures are still evolving. This means they may need to wear multiple hats, adapting quickly to shifting client needs and internal priorities. Unlike larger companies with established support systems, startup Account Managers often take on broader responsibilities, such as helping shape customer onboarding or product feedback loops. This dynamic can be both challenging and rewarding, offering significant opportunities to influence growth and build strong client relationships from the ground up.

What does an Account Manager do at a startup?

An Account Manager at a startup is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met, and helping them achieve success with the company's products or services. They often serve as the main point of contact between the client and the startup, handling inquiries, addressing concerns, and identifying opportunities for growth and upselling. In the fast-paced startup environment, Account Managers may also assist with onboarding, troubleshooting, and collaborating closely with sales, marketing, and product teams to deliver an excellent customer experience.

Job description

Finvari is a fast-growing SaaS startup transforming the way construction companies handle payments. Our mission is to eliminate manual, repetitive payment tasks, empowering construction leaders to focus on building the infrastructure of tomorrow. From field employees to the C-Suite, our customer-centric software streamlines processes, improves efficiency, and drives innovation across the industry.
We're a close-knit, experienced team with a track record of building and scaling successful software companies-some of which have even gone public. At Finvari, innovation, creativity, and customer focus are at the heart of what we do. We're looking for team members who share our passion for problem-solving and want to make a direct impact. Our culture is collaborative, autonomous, and customer-obsessed.
About the Role
As an Account Manager, you'll own the full expansion sales cycle for a defined book of existing mid-market construction customers. This is a quota-carrying role ideal for a consultative seller who enjoys strategic account ownership and is focused on uncovering opportunities to deliver additional value for customers.
In this role, you'll collaborate closely with the Chief Revenue Officer, Sales Team, and Customer Success to maximize customer lifetime value while identifying and closing upsell opportunities over time.
This role requires residency in Washington, Colorado, Tennessee or Florida.
Responsibilities
  • Drive account growth by identifying, positioning, and closing upsell opportunities within existing customers
  • Conduct regular business reviews with key stakeholders to assess product adoption, value realization, and expansion opportunities
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with construction leaders, finance teams, and operations stakeholders
  • Maintain accurate pipeline, activity, and forecast data in our CRM (Hubspot)
  • Represent Finvari in customer meetings, site visits, and industry events as needed
  • Serve as the voice of the customer internally, providing product and market feedback to Sales, Product, and Leadership
  • Partner with the Chief Revenue Officer on account strategy, opportunity prioritization, and deal execution
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of quota-carrying experience in account management, customer success, or sales
  • Experience selling SaaS, fintech, or commercial card / payment solutions
  • Proven ability to drive expansion revenue and manage a book of business
  • Strong consultative selling skills with the ability to engage executive-level stakeholders
  • Exceptional communication, organization, and time-management skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple expansion opportunities simultaneously
  • Experience using CRM tools (HubSpot preferred)
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment with autonomy and accountability
  • Willingness to travel periodically for customer relationship-building

The On-Target Earnings (OTE) for this role is $175,000 with unlimited commission potential.
Benefits include:
  • 100% premium coverage for employee health insurance premiums and partial coverage for dependents.
  • Health Savings Account with a company contribution
  • Flexible Spending Account Options: Health Care and Dependent Care
  • Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance
  • 11 paid company holidays plus generous Paid Time Off (PTO) policy
  • Plus stock options so that you can participate in the company's success!
