What is the difference between Account Manager Startup vs Account Executive?

AspectAccount Manager StartupAccount Executive
Required CredentialsRelevant experience in client management, sales, or customer service; often a bachelor's degreeSales or marketing background; bachelor's degree often preferred
Work EnvironmentFast-paced startup setting, collaborative teams, flexible rolesSales-driven environment, target-focused, often in corporate or agency settings
Employer & Industry UsageStartups across tech, SaaS, e-commerceSales organizations, tech companies, marketing agencies

While both roles involve client interaction and sales skills, an Account Manager Startup focuses on maintaining and growing existing client relationships within a startup environment. An Account Executive primarily focuses on acquiring new clients and closing sales. The roles overlap in skills but differ in their core responsibilities and work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Account Manager in a startup environment, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Account Manager at a startup, you need strong relationship-building skills, sales acumen, and a background in business or marketing, often evidenced by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, project management platforms, and digital communication systems is typically required. Outstanding adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and effective communication help you stand out in the fast-paced and dynamic startup setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving customer success, managing rapid change, and supporting business growth in a competitive environment.

What are some unique challenges Account Managers face when working at a startup compared to established companies?

Account Managers at startups often encounter a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes and structures are still evolving. This means they may need to wear multiple hats, adapting quickly to shifting client needs and internal priorities. Unlike larger companies with established support systems, startup Account Managers often take on broader responsibilities, such as helping shape customer onboarding or product feedback loops. This dynamic can be both challenging and rewarding, offering significant opportunities to influence growth and build strong client relationships from the ground up.

What does an Account Manager do at a startup?

An Account Manager at a startup is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met, and helping them achieve success with the company's products or services. They often serve as the main point of contact between the client and the startup, handling inquiries, addressing concerns, and identifying opportunities for growth and upselling. In the fast-paced startup environment, Account Managers may also assist with onboarding, troubleshooting, and collaborating closely with sales, marketing, and product teams to deliver an excellent customer experience.

The Account Manager Role

As an Account Manager at Take Command, you will be responsible for managing and growing relationships with our existing broker partners and employer clients utilizing Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements (ICHRA). Your primary objective will be to drive revenue growth through retention, expansion, and deepening of current partnerships, while ensuring an exceptional client experience. The following job description outlines the responsibilities and requirements for this role:

Responsibilities:

Serve as the primary point of contact for an assigned portfolio of broker partners and employer clients, building strong, long-term relationships that drive retention and growth.

Develop and execute account plans to identify upsell and expansion opportunities within existing broker and employer relationships.

Conduct regular check-ins, business reviews, and product trainings with brokers and employers to ensure they are maximizing the value of ICHRA.

Collaborate with the sales and marketing teams to support renewal strategies, re-engagement campaigns, and referral generation from existing accounts.

Negotiate renewal contracts and pricing agreements with employers to ensure satisfaction and profitability.

Provide exceptional customer service to brokers and employers, proactively addressing concerns and resolving issues to maintain high satisfaction levels.

Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and competitor activities to identify risks and opportunities within your book of business.

Monitor and report on account health metrics, renewal rates, and expansion revenue to identify areas for improvement and adjust account strategies accordingly.

Support and mentor junior account management team members to ensure consistent client experience and achievement of retention targets.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Sales, Marketing, or a related field.

Proven track record of 3+ years in account management or client success in a B2B environment, preferably in the healthcare industry.

Experience working with health insurance brokers, carriers, and employer clients, with a strong understanding of the regulatory landscape.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain trust-based relationships with brokers and employers.

Strong presentation skills to deliver compelling business reviews, product updates, and renewal discussions.

Ability to manage a large portfolio of accounts independently while collaborating cross-functionally with internal teams.

Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to proactively address client challenges and find creative solutions.

High level of organization and attention to detail to manage account activities, renewal timelines, and contract documentation.

Proficiency in MS Office and CRM/account management software.

Willingness to travel to meet with broker partners and employer clients and attend industry conferences as needed.

SaaS experience is a plus!

What it takes to join our team

At Take Command, we believe in three key traits that set up a foundation for success in all sales roles within our team:

Coachability

The health insurance industry is complex and constantly changing. We are looking for folks that are not only open to being coached to success but are able to take feedback and implement it quickly. The attitude of "Feedback is a gift" goes a long way!

Work Ethic

We are big believers in "Talent is overrated" and that those with True Grit will rise to the top quicker than those with an abundance of talent but fail to put in the necessary time to achieve their potential. You may be familiar with Malcolm Gladwell's "10,000-hour rule," asserting that the key to achieving true expertise in any skill is simply a matter of practicing, albeit in the correct way, for at least 10,000 hours. Do you have the hunger and desire to get to these 10,000 hours quicker than anyone else?

Attitude

Account management is full of challenges, and there will be more situations that don't go your way than ones that do. Feeling comfortable navigating setbacks with the attitude of "Failure is a steppingstone on the path to success" is what is needed to be successful in any client-facing role, especially in a startup environment as we continue to learn, iterate, and improve. We are looking for positive people to add to our team who believe it isn't success that leads to happiness - it's happiness that leads to success.

Account Manager Salary: $105,000-$115,000 OTE ($60,000-$70,000 base + $45,000 variable)
