Job Description
The Director of Academic Advising is responsible for the overall operations of the Academic
Advising Office. The Director will develop and conduct training systems for Faculty and Staff Advisors. The Director will conduct and coordinate new transfer student advising appointments and will coordinate advising for new first year students during the orientation process. They will also coordinate advisor assignments for continuing students. Assist students in the development of academic plans as appropriate for their stated educational goals. These efforts may include, but are not limited to: advising, registration, program changes, course planning, transfer credits, and degree completion requirements. The Director will be responsible for conducting annual assessment of the Academic Advising program.
Essential Duties Summary
  • Maintain accurate and current degree audit requirements in Jenzabar One desktop software.
  • Coordinate first year and new transfer student advising.
  • Collaborate with department chairs to maintain current advising information for discipline specific careers, professional programs, and academic paths.
  • Provide reports on Academic Advising including Major/Minor Reports, departmental reports, and other reports as requested.
  • Coordinate all Academic Advisor Assignments
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs to asses student college readiness for new students and maintain records of course placement.
  • Stay abreast of university policies and direct students to campus resources as appropriate.
  • Coordinate regular training sessions for advisors. This includes new advisor training and continuing education sessions for all advisors.
  • Collaborate with the War Hawk Success center to participate in Academic Success Coach training as it pertains to advising.
  • Perform regular review of the Academic Advising program. This includes:
    • Annual assessment
    • Stop light surveys for the Academic Advising program
    • Review of the advising models and systems
    • Updating policy and procedure as needed to reflect best practices.
    • Collect, document, and provide necessary reports related to the University's Quality Enhancement Plan.
  • Other duties as assigned by the AVPAA for Student Success.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher required. Master's degree preferred in the area of higher education administration or student services.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years' experience in higher education in a student service-related field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the areas of academic advising and/or registrar.
  • Experience with Jenzabar One desktop preferred.
  • Candidate exhibits strong interpersonal skills, and experience working with students, parents, faculty, and staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external constituents
  • Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office Word, Excel, and Outlook)

Physical Demands
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements
  • Position is physically comfortable; individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks
  • Typical work occurs during business hours Monday through Friday however this position may require flexible hours as needed to include evenings and weekends serving students in virtual, on-, and off-campus environments
