Job Description

• The Assistant Director of Academic Advising, reporting to the Director of Upper Division Health and Science Advising, plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team.
• The Assistant Director of Academic Advising provides transformational and strategic leadership and supervision of a team of academic advisors in a manner that supports and complements CAS/Maxwell Is faculty advising model.
• This position also works collaboratively with the Director of Operations and Director of Career Advising creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students, carry out the vision for the department, and work synergistically with the Division of Student Success, faculty and academic leaders of the University's educational programs, and the University in its entirety.
• In conjunction with best practices, the Assistant Director of Academic Advising will design, develop, update, and deliver workshops for undergraduate students on topics related to major and/or minor selection, program requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning.

Education and Experience

• Master's degree and experience in a high-level support or a management role in higher education desired.
• At least two years' experience in academic advising preferred. Experience in assessment, planning, program reviews, self-studies, academic advising, working with individuals under time and multitasking pressures.

Skills and Knowledge

• Required: Expert level knowledge in academic counseling methods and career modeling to interpret and communicate results of individual aptitude and career assessment instruments.
• Career exploration and counseling experience as part of academic advising experience.
• Ability to communicate and work with diverse populations, excellent interpersonal, planning, teamwork, and organizational skills.
• Also required: ability to independently interpret and make recommendations for improvement in advising policy and procedure; relate well to students, parents, scholars, faculty, staff and others from diverse cultural backgrounds; create and maintain efficient systems and processes; use expert judgement in the managing of escalated cases; proactively identify potential problems and lead to mitigate those problems or student situations for your reports.
• Quality community building and collaboration skills. Strong sense of ethics, written and verbal communication skills. Passion for student development through cutting-edge national practices.
• Sound professional judgment and emotional intelligence.

Responsibilities

• Provide academic and professional (career and graduate pathway) advising through one-on-one and group sessions for assigned cohort of undergraduate students.
• Ensure requirements are met for all undergraduate students for on-time graduation.
• Support assigned advising team in degree audits, establish regular communications with advisees, and maintain up-to-date and accurate student records utilizing University's prescribed software.
• Manage escalated student cases that arise from pre-health advisees in collaboration with the Director of Pre-Health Advising.
• Under the direction of the Director of Pre-Health Advising, the Assistant Director will design and assess pre-med trainings for advisors outside of the Pre-Health advising group; implement and utilize pre-health advising assessment data to continuously improve the quality of pre-health advising; provide assistance and quality control
• In conjunction with best practices, design, develop, update, and deliver a variety of workshops for undergraduate students on topics such as: major and/or minor selection, program requirements, professional school admissions, job search strategies, and academic record enhancer programs.
• Support planning of special events that facilitate group advising, including collaborative events across campus that pertain to Arts and Sciences/ Maxwell students.
• Collaborate and maintain relationships with faculty and staff in schools and colleges within SU to help identify and guide students towards successful college and post college paths.
• Partner with Alumni and/or Employer relations (Central) to assist in helping to achieve education and career goals.
• Serve as main point of contact with students and guide them through various program options in the University. Attend and participate in division, department and university-wide meetings and represent Office of Student Success as needed.
• Identify, track, and report metrics on all career-related outcomes such as student appointments, career education engagement, internships, and placement into career and graduate school.
• Administer and interpret career-related assessments. Collect these data points utilizing the university-wide shared career technology software
• . Report metrics to College and University leadership as requested. Evaluate progress and assess programming and delivery for continuous improvement of student success.
