What Is a Nursing Home Assistant Administrator and How to Become One

Nursing Home Assistant Administrator

What Does a Nursing Home Assistant Administrator Do?

As a nursing home assistant administrator, you provide operational support to the head administrator of a nursing home. Your job duties include monitoring different departments and units at the facility, checking new patients into the assisted living facility, reviewing insurance and billing information, addressing facilities and maintenance issues, and monitoring staffing needs. Your responsibilities also include helping the lead administrator or director to coordinate care for each resident. This involves knowing the patient’s history, communicating with in-house and external physicians and medical professionals, and providing transportation services when a resident needs to attend appointments outside the senior home.

How Do I Become a Nursing Home Assistant Administrator?

The qualifications needed to become an assistant nursing home administrator depend largely on the size of the facility and whether it is publicly or privately run. At a large facility, you may need to have a medical background, such as being a registered nurse with several years of experience in senior care. At smaller facilities, you may not need to be a medical practitioner, but you should have experience in medical or hospital administration, including work in a managerial or coordinator role. Useful skills include strong verbal and written communication, excellent customer service, and computer literacy.
