What Does a Fragrance Vendor Do?

As a fragrance vendor, your job is to sell perfume and cologne in a retail environment. A fragrance vendor may also sell products online, but the scent-based nature of the industry means it relies heavily on in-store efforts to find new customers. In this role, you may recommend a product to each customer, demonstrate how to use fragrances, participate in special sales events, and maintain a pleasant selling area—including managing the smell rather than letting too many product samples mix together. A fragrance vendor may also wrap products for safekeeping and manage inventories. This job title refers exclusively to selling fragrances directly to customers and should not be confused with jobs that sell perfume to stores.

How to Become a Fragrance Vendor

The primary qualifications for becoming a fragrance vendor are a high school diploma, excellent sales skills, and a keen nose. A fragrance vendor must detect subtle differences in each perfume or product and make informed recommendations to each customer based on the results, so managing your sense of smell is important in this job. Employers also expect you to maintain your physical appearance throughout the day. Experience is helpful in this role, so the more time you spend in retail, the easier it will be to get another job in this industry. Fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of a fragrance vendor requires interpersonal skills and manual dexterity.
