About Our Opportunity
As a Sr. Medical Underwriter for our Certus team here at Valenz, you will be a key player in our stop-loss and risk mitigation solutions. You'll assess and manage medical-related risks associated with new and renewal employer groups, ensuring compliance with carrier underwriting guidelines. A strategic mindset, analytical acumen, and a deep understanding of the healthcare insurance landscape are crucial for success in this role. Additionally, you'll build and maintain strong relationships with our internal business development team and external producers.

Things You’ll Do Here:

  • Policy Structuring: Determine suitable premiums and stop-loss levels based on medical risk assessments, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Data Analysis: Utilize advanced underwriting software and analytics tools to review and analyze applications, factoring in varying risk components and potential for loss.
  • Client Interaction: Partner and maintain positive relationships with brokers, agents, and clients to gather information, clarify details, and negotiate policy terms within authority limits while maintaining service and loss ratio standards.
  • Industry Knowledge: Stay updated on health insurance industry trends, medical regulations, insurance laws, emerging risks, and customer needs to provide informed recommendations for underwriting policies and standards.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions, promoting transparency and informed decision-making.
  • Team Collaboration: Work with the risk management team to develop and implement effective risk mitigation and loss prevention strategies. Partner with peer underwriters and other team members as needed.
Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential duties.

What You’ll Bring to the Team:
  • 7+ years of recent experience as a Medical Underwriter or equivalent role working on behalf of a carrier, MGU, or TPA.
  • Exceptional analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, with a proven track record in effective risk assessment.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to foster and maintain professional relationships.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology and the health insurance industry, including laws, regulatory standards, market trends, etc.

A plus if you have:
  • Experience with stop-loss insurance underwriting.
