Established in 1998 and located in midtown Manhattan, Bloomsbury USA is a general interest publisher of adult and children’s books that has become known for both its high-quality fiction and non-fiction for adults and children as well as its extensive Academic publishing from the world’s most recognized experts.

The Academic division publishes a portfolio from the world’s most-recognized experts across the Humanities and Social Sciences. Our audience ranges from academics to librarians to professionals to readers who are ardent enthusiasts across a wide range of interests. Our authors are often considered to be among the most respected dramatists and scholars in their fields and include such luminaries as Ayanna Thompson, Valerie Steele, Bertolt Brecht, Nina Jankowicz, and Slavoj Žižek to name but a few.

Position

The Marketing Manager works within a team of marketers who are responsible for promoting Bloomsbury's academic books in the United States. The person in this role markets the Visual Arts (including Fashion, Interior Design, Design, Architecture and Art & Visual Culture), and Drama & Performance Studies lists (including The Arden Shakespeare and Methuen Drama) – approximately 230 books per year and growing. The role oversees the promotional activities for academic monographs, textbooks, coursebooks, reference works, and trade crossover titles in these subjects.

Responsibilities

  • Marketing Planning: Plan and execute marketing plans and strategies for the Visual Arts and Drama & Performance Studies lists in the US. Work with sales and publicity to identify key titles for promotion in the US.
  • Create and deploy engaging email marketing campaigns directed at an academic audience.
  • Create adoption campaigns for textbooks to increase adoption into courses in the US.
  • Work closely with sales and editorial colleagues to achieve sales growth.
  • Gather and analyze data to improve marketing campaigns, and feedback to sales and editorial colleagues to provide US market insight.
  • With the Conference Manager, plan 5-6 key academic conferences in relevant subject areas.
  • Plan and execute social media strategies, including Twitter, Facebook, and relevant blogs
  • Author Support: Work with authors to communicate the appropriate marketing plan, help them plan and execute events, and provide materials and information.
  • Review Copies: Responsible for creating tailored lists of journals and media outlets for each book and ensuring copies are sent to them to solicit media reviews for publicity purposes. Research new review media and ensure addresses and contacts are correct.
  • Advertising: Responsible for assessing and buying ad space and working with a designer to create advertisements for books including pay-per-click/social advertising, journals and conference programs.
  • Budgeting: Responsible for managing the marketing budget for these subject lists in the US
  • Optimize metadata and discovery/SEO
  • List Building: Responsible for building lists of contacts who are interested in Visual Arts and Drama & Performance Studies.
  • Collaboration and communication: As lead marketer, is responsible for scheduling list meetings for the Design and Art & Visual Culture lists. Works with US and UK editors, UK marketers, and US sales team to ensure good departmental and geographical communication.
  • Contribute to regular publishing and other team meetings.

This position has no direct reports.

Requirements:
  • 2 to 4 years experience in Academic Publishing
  • Microsoft Office (required)
  • Email service provider, ideally Mailchimp
  • CRM, ideally Salesforce
  • Content Management System (CMS)
  • Ability to create and execute a marketing campaign
  • Copywriting for marketing materials
  • Understanding of the academic market
  • Interest in the visual or performing arts (helpful)
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Adaptability
  • Written and oral communication skills
