Job Description

Days split between the waters of Smithville Lake and the Park business office.


The Marina Specialist I will do just this overseeing the daily operations of Marina. The position requires knowledge of marine fueling systems, knowledge of boats and boat operations, organizational skills, and skill in using databases, spreadsheets, and other office forms.


A high school diploma or GED is required as well as being legally licensed and insured to drive a motor vehicle with ability to drive under normal and inclement weather situations. The ideal candidate will also have Missouri boater registration card.


The hourly salary is $17.75 with employee benefits package that includes two defined benefit retirement plans fully funded by the County, choice of three medical plans including two high deductible plans with County funded HSA's. The option to include dental, vision, flexible spending, and supplemental plans. Full-time employees are also offered life insurance (2X annual salary) paid by the County, paid vacation/sick leave, 14 paid holidays, LTD and tuition reimbursement.

General Purpose:

This Marina Specialist I position oversees daily operations of Marina, assists in supervising seasonal staff, transacts with public regarding slip rentals, marina equipment rental, retail purchases including fuel and equipment for water safety.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible position that works independently with general oversight and direction from the Parks Services Manager
  • Provides full service to customers.
  • Prepares and monitors daily deposits, ongoing revenue, and cash control.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily operation of Marina
  • Insures fiscally responsible management of marina operations.
  • Availability to work various shifts and schedules, including weekends and holidays.
  • On call for after hours or emergency services as needed
  • Provides fuel quantiles for daily totals.
  • Fuels boats and wave runners as needed.
  • Works directly with customers wishing to rent marina equipment or slips.
  • Schedules routine maintenance for marina equipment and the docks including trash removal and spider web removal.
  • Performs maintenance and snow removal, treats with ice melt all walkways on the docks.
  • Operates cash register and prepares daily deposit and cash control report.
  • Reports unusual occurrences immediately and provides a written follow up report within 24 hours, an example would be accident on either property or liability report.
  • Assists in supervising temporary or seasonal employees by assuring assignments of tasks periodically checking their work and providing training as needed.
  • Gives instructions to seasonal or temporary employees concerning boat rental making them aware of all safety factors and regulations.
  • Assists in installation of winter dock aerators.
  • Trains staff in proper care and equipment of the live bait tanks and aerators
  • Other duties as assigned and reasonably qualified to perform.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of practices, principles, and procedures of assigned area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of marine fueling systems
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of fish and game laws as to what is in season, length, daily limit, and possession limits.
  • Knowledge of operation of a cash register and daily reports
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and practices used in maintaining a full-service marina.
  • Skilled in the operation of a personal computer and various software applications and other office equipment
  • Skilled in using databases, spreadsheets, and other office forms.
  • Knowledge of boats such as capacity, weight limits and outfitting
  • Knowledge of boat operations
  • Ability to plan and organize assigned work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, the public, and other governmental agencies regarding complex or sensitive issues or regulations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Intermediate skill level with personal computers
  • Intermediate skill level with Excel and Word
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator license and the ability to drive a motor vehicle under normal and emergency response situations

Desired Qualifications:

  • Marina related experience .
  • Possession of a valid Missouri boater registration card

Minimum ADA and Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively on the telephone, 2-way radio and in person.
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written/typed documents and text materials.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment and personal computer.
  • Be able to work outdoors in conditions of extreme heat or cold with frequent exposure to wind, dust, allergens, rain, snow, insects, snakes, and poison ivy.
  • Be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 80 pounds.
  • Be physically able to grasp, walk, stand, stoop, kneel and perform manual labor for extended periods.
  • Be able to sit in one area for more than two hours
  • Be able to walk and stand on uneven ground to perform work.
  • Be able to read and write English sufficiently read warning labels, MSDS sheets and equipment manuals and to prepare and turn in handwritten work reports.
  • Be able to pass a drug-screening test.
  • Be able to see colors clearly.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in both office and bait house. The noise level in the work environment can vary depending on location from quiet to at times may be loud, with frequent interruptions and multiple demands.
  • Some work performed outside around construction equipment, in varying types of terrain, near excavations or constructions sites, exposed to insects, snakes, poison ivy and inclement weather.
  • In times of emergency and/or public safety incidents, may be exposed for prolonged periods to outdoor weather conditions that may vary from extreme heat to extreme cold; may be exposed to debris, fumes, odors airborne particles and dust, may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and other hazardous conditions.
