Position Overview

Members of the Tax team at Hunter Douglas are afforded opportunities not often found in other organizations.  In this role you will have the ability to work with a variety of divisions and entity types as part of an expanding company offering exposure to the entire tax process from start to finish.  You will actively participate in decision making with management rather than just being on the receiving end of assignments. We are specifically looking for your best practices and ideas for continuous improvement.  

What you'll do

  • The Tax Supervisor will report to the Senior Manager, Tax overseeing sales & use tax compliance, including all State and Local tax returns for assigned divisions, audits and notices. Compliance includes managing and developing support for exemption certificate administration, account reconciliation, and OneSource to SAP mapping and integration.
  • Assist with State and Local tax audits. Obtaining information, doing research and developing arguments and positions that advocate the company’s positions.
  • Work with the IT team with defect resolution, assisting with testing new programming, addressing mapping issues, setting up new entities and users within the system.
  • Work closely with North American finance team and various plant controllers to gather required financial information, verify it, and implement tax accounting practices and policies across various entities in North America.
  • Manage month-end tax account reconciliations required from the Tax Department which includes use tax accrual analyses.
  • Assist with unclaimed property reports.
  • Prepare and/or review property tax renditions, process assessment notices and bills, and manage audits.
  • Assist with preparation and filing of 1099’s and Canadian T4A equivalents in OneSource.
  • Work across organization boundaries and all levels of the company to achieve country or corporate objectives. Be able to research and provide guidance in regards to sales, use, property, and 1099 questions posed from external divisions.
  • Integrate and train new staff while leading the continued professional development of the team. Review, when necessary, staff workpapers and prepared returns and payments.
  • Share best practices across North American finance team, e.g. process improvements, and procedure changes.
  • Provide proactive/unsolicited consultation (business partner), interpret and present clearly and concisely complex financial and operational matters to various departmental leaders to drive business decisions.
  • Collaborate with Senior Manager, Tax, to highlight issues, explain results, make improvements, manage projects, identify inefficiencies, understand operations and lead the development of analysis of tax function.
  • Monitor and implement internal controls as necessary to ensure reporting integrity, safeguard company assets, identify risks and participate in the external audit.
  • Display integrity – be transparent with all stakeholders, escalate issues as required.

  • You have knowledge of SOX 404 compliance.
  • You have previous experience with multistate tax, exemption/resale, and 1099.
  • Experience with Canada and Mexico a plus!

What you’ll have

  • Accounting or Finance degree required; Advanced degree in Tax or CPA program preferred
  • Proven track record of driving for results with minimal ongoing direction
  • Experience in SAP (or similar ERP system) in manufacturing and construction environment preferred
  • Experience with SOX 404 Controls a plus
  • Experience in managing relationships with external auditors and tax professionals
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office applications (primarily Excel) with OneSource Indirect Tax Compliance and Determination Systems required
  • 6+ years’ experience in public or private accounting and/or financial planning and analysis
  • Some exposure to Mexican and Canadian taxes a plus
  • Strong desire to continuously improve and identify new opportunities
  • Strong analytical approach to problem solving with high regard for detail and accuracy
  • Ability to concisely summarize large amounts of data to drive decision making process
  • Energetic and inquisitive, quick learner, takes initiative and follows through
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate with employees at various levels throughout the organization
  • Ability to keep pace with the changing nature of various tax laws and regulations
  • Technologically-savvy with ability to quickly learn new systems and processes
