JOB TITLE: Maintenance Mechanic

JOB SUMMARY: This job description is not to be considered all-inclusive, but generally describes the overall operating procedure as well as lists certain duties and required abilities associated with the position. Makes mechanical repairs to equipment, machinery, and structures throughout the plant.

REPORTS TO: Works under the general direction of the maintenance foreman. May also follow directions of others such as maintenance supervisor, shift foremen, shipping supervisor, or quarry supervisor

EQUIPMENT USED: Including, but not limited to mechanical and electrical hand and power tools, micrometers, manometers, feeler gauges, dial indicators, verniers, alignment tools, calipers, tachometer, multi-meter, calibrators, amp meter, calculators, NTD test equipment, welding machine, cutting torch, paint and sand blast equipment, radios, floor and bench grinders, drill press, metal break, bending roll, pipe threading machine, steam cleaner, hoists, chain falls, mobile cranes, man lift, forklift, trucks, wreakers, jigs, vices, and any other equipment associated with the job.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically capable of any strenuous physical assignment. Must be able to climb steps, ladders and traverse walkways (including catwalks). Have no fear of heights or confined spaces. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to reach at least six feet. Must have adequate vision and hearing to allow satisfactory job performance.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to read common workplace documents including letters, procedures, manuals, warning labels and signs, and memos to extract details, apply instructions, draw conclusions, understand complex information, understand technical jargon and acronyms. Must be able to listen, comprehend, and take appropriate actions based on verbal messages. Must be able to compose grammatically correct written messages as required by the job in legibly completing company records, logs, memos, inspection forms, etc. Must be able to apply mathematical reasoning in common workplace situations regarding money, time, measurements, fractions and decimals, proportions, and ratios, negative numbers, percentages, areas and volumes, troubleshooting errors, and non-linear graphs. Must be able to find, extract, understand, and use information from charts, graphs, tables, forms, maps, and drawings. Must be able to understand the technologies of electricity, mechanics, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics in order to identify and solve workplace problems. Must be able to make informed decisions in an accurate and quick manner while working in a stressful environment. Must be able to participate in and successfully complete various company sponsored, work related training.

JOB DUTIES: Performs preventive maintenance inspections on plant equipment and machinery such as kilns, coolers, mills, crushers, fans, belt conveyors, bucket elevators, drag conveyors, screw conveyors, pumps, valves, feeders of all sorts, compressors, boilers, packers, palletizers, vibrators, agitators, cranes, structural components, etc. Enters and retrieves data from the computerized maintenance management system. Patches holes, replaces components, repacks seals, cleans and replaces air filters, makes silo changes, changes dust collector bags, adjusts chains, belts, rollers, idlers, etc. Aligns shafts, gears, pinions, etc. Lubricates machinery and equipment. Operates mobile equipment such as gas & oil truck, dump truck, forklift, man lift, mobile crane, etc. Replaces cables on cranes, both mobile and overhead. Makes repairs to buildings such as siding, doors, windows, plumbing, etc. Does all types of welding including chamfering, gouging, hard surfacing, build up, brazing, etc. on all types of metal in horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions. Fabricates chutes, hoppers, piping, repair parts for machinery and equipment from drawings. Sets steel and/or machinery from drawings. Attaches hoses and other necessary equipment to rail tank cars and/or P.D. trucks for unloading materials. Inspects, maintains, lubricates, adjusts, and repairs dust collectors and all allied equipment, both mechanical and electrical. Keeps work areas clean and safe and all tools in proper operating condition. Performs tasks and maintains records related to compliance with hazardous waste fuels regulations. Cuts bolts, pipes, etc. with oxygen acetylene outfit. Builds up and hard surfaces hammers, drag chains, chutes, etc. Fills out daily report of duties performed and materials used. Operates vibration analysis equipment. Machines, reworks, and fabricates such parts as shafts, hangers, take-ups, bearings, pins, bushings, sleeves, etc. Bores out sprockets, sheaves, couplings, etc. Repairs shop equipment such as air wrenches, jackhammers, grinders, scalers, etc. Line bores machinery. Follows daily lubrication and inspection schedules. Keeps lubricants to prescribed levels, changes blower and compressor filters as inspections warrant. Unloads, stores, and transfers drums of lubricants as necessary. Fills out inspection/lubrication logs and generates work orders. Installs and repairs lubrication pumps, tubing, nozzles, and valves. Services and repairs boiler and boiler feed water and chemical system. Services and repairs plant air compressors and inner/after coolers. Inspects and repairs automatic sprinkler systems. Performs other duties as assigned. Job duties are subject to change as directed by management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High school diploma preferred.
  2. Two-year technical degree in a related field is desired.

3. Must be capable of satisfactorily completing MSHA and RCRA training requirements of the job as well as training resulting from equipment updates or modifications, process changes, or the mandates of regulatory agencies.

4. Must successfully complete on-the-job training provided by the designated department supervisor or otherwise qualified employee.

5. NCCER Certification

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

A. Required to work inside or outside during inclement weather, daylight, darkness, weekends, holidays, and/or rotational shifts. May be required to work overtime.

B. Subject to shift and/or job assignment changes according to union contract in effect at the time.

C. Required to work in an industrial environment and will be subject to the hazards normally present in such places including very hot and/or very cold conditions, heights, and confined spaces.

D. Required to wear Company Policy approved safety equipment such as: hard hats, safety glasses, ear plugs or other sound suppression devices, safety shoes/boots, harnesses/belts, gloves, protective suits, dust masks and/or respirators which may require a clean shaven face to provide proper protection.
