We are Gateway Regional Medical Center. Our primary function is to offer continuous nursing, medical, and other health and social services on a 24-hour basis, under physician directed care and RN supervision.

Statement of Purpose

Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, the Laboratory Supervisor provides accurate and timely clinical laboratory services used in the assessment, treatment and diagnosis of disease. Responsible for resolution of all problems. In collaboration with the Director, will assist in the responsible for entire operations including but not limited to: clinical and all regulatory, Staff development, financial, budget, capital, communication to all customers, operational issues like supplies and inventory. The laboratory supervisor also assists the laboratory managers/director in accomplishing system and lab-wide goals and objectives, supervises the work of personnel in assigned areas of responsibility, and promotes teamwork and cohesion at all levels.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical activities in accordance with all established departmental policies and procedures to provide accurate and timely clinical laboratory services 100% of the time.
  2. Performs and evaluates quality control procedures to monitor instrument operation or assay Integrity, and quality of reported results: assesses specimen quality.
  3. Performs preventive maintenance in accordance with established departmental standards and procedures 100% of the time.
  4. Uses Hospital and all Laboratory Information systems according to established policy
  5. Assumes troubleshooting responsibilities as needed, handling general lab issues as indicated, and always exercising sound and professional judgment in determining items that require referral. Informs immediate supervisor in a timely and accurate manner of all decisions made.
  6. Provides age-appropriate care to children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric population by demonstrating knowledge and skills to perform, assess, and interpret laboratory testing for the ages of the patients served by the department.

  8. Encourages staff participation in decision-making
  9. Maintains an adequate and effective workforce according to volume and types of workload by preparing work schedules.
  10. Recruits and selects staff according to established job qualifications, involves supervisors and staff
  11. Completes performance appraisals, competency assessments, grievance procedures, counseling's, and discipline in a fair and consistent manner on a timely basis.
  12. Assists with the development of job descriptions and standards of performance
  13. Assists with payroll functions
  14. Encourages professional growth and development of all Laboratory personnel and enhances own professional growth.
  15. Upholds compliance with applicable regulatory and accrediting agency requirements as well as hospital and departmental standards, demonstrating support for the above at all times, always referring observed problems to supervisors in a timely manner for investigation/corrective actions, and testing proficiency specimens in the same manner as patient tests at all times.
  16. Effectively communicates with coworkers, supervisors and other contacts at all times. Actively and cooperatively exchanges information with coworkers/supervisors on an ongoing basis and in area and departmental meetings. Provides supervisor or lead tech with accurate and timely updates of operations.
  17. Maintains professional growth, development, competency and education through reading, seminars, workshops, conferences, and professional affiliations. Always selecting activities that are relative to current/upcoming issues and concerns in area of responsibility and which will maximize benefits to the department and health system. Reviews applicable procedures manual annually, and fulfills minimum educational requirements per established departmental policy.
  18. Actively participates in the laboratory continuous quality improvement program, keeping abreast of CQI activities on an ongoing basis, assisting with CQI studies as needed, recommending aspects of care as indicated, and thoroughly investigating and documenting problems and their resolutions. Always exercises sound and professional judgment in making timely decisions for corrective actions that are in accordance with established departmental standards.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Certifications

A Baccalaureate degree in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, completed and approved ASCP (or equivalent) certification pathway or have satisfied CLIA requirements for HEW certification. Also, candidates must have completed one year in an accredited laboratory training program.

Requirements

Successful candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in laboratory science with a minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Position supports the efficient operations of the clinical laboratory which functions on a continual 24-hour cycle. The laboratory manager directly reports to the Administrative Director of Laboratory Services and plays an integral part in employee relationships and communication. A successful candidate must exhibit strong communication and critical thinking skills.
