Position: School Nurse
Location: Arlington, VA
Duration: Immediate placement with ongoing assignment during the academic year

Job Summary:

We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to provide essential care for a non-ambulatory and non-verbal student in a school setting and during transportation on the school bus. The nurse will be responsible for following the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan to ensure that the student receives the necessary medical attention and support throughout the school day. The role requires a commitment to providing high-quality care and ensuring the safety and well-being of the student.

Key Responsibilities:

• Student Care:
  • Provide medical support and care to a non-ambulatory and non-verbal student in accordance with the student's IEP or 504 plan.
  • Recognize and respond to respiratory distress and immediately initiate resuscitative measures such as suctioning, CPR, and reinsertion of tracheotomy tube.
• Nursing Procedures:
  • Perform tracheotomy care and provide ventilator support for the student as needed.
  • Administer gastrostomy care and feeding, including the use of feeding pumps and reinsertion of gastrostomy tubes.
  • Utilize a bag-valve mask (Ambu bag) when necessary for respiratory support.
  • Perform suctioning to maintain clear airways and ensure the student's safety.
• Transportation Support:
  • Accompany the student on the school bus and provide medical care as needed during transportation to and from school.
• Compliance:
  • Follow Virginia School Health Guidelines and adhere to established protocols and procedures for school nursing.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records related to the student's care and medical interventions.
• Collaboration:
  • Communicate effectively with school staff, parents, and medical professionals to ensure continuity of care and a safe learning environment.
• Professional Development:
  • Stay updated on best practices and new techniques in pediatric and school nursing.

Qualifications:

• Licensing and Certifications:
  • Current Virginia nursing license (RN or LPN) or a license permitting work in Virginia from another state.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
• Experience:
  • Recent pediatric nursing experience within the parameters established by Virginia School Health Guidelines.
  • Experience in working with students who have medical needs, such as tracheotomy care, ventilator support, and gastrostomy care, is preferred.
