According to department policies, procedures and protocols, functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and assists healthcare team members in delivering patient care to emergency room patients.  This includes preparing patients for examinations and treatments, obtaining a chief complaint and vital signs, obtaining specimens, setting-up rooms with necessary supplies and equipment, and assisting physicians and staff nurses during treatments.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Transports or escorts patients to examination area, radiology, nursing units, and the like.
  • Interviews patient to obtain chief complaint and determine current condition requiring emergency treatment. Takes and records patient's vital signs, including oxygen saturation, height, and weight.
  • Obtains specimens from patient for laboratory analysis. Instructs patient in proper method for obtaining specimens. Properly labels specimens and forwards to laboratory.
  • Sets up various types of equipment and attaches patient to same, according to physician orders. Monitors equipment to ensure its proper operation.
  • Immobilizes patient, as directed by and in unison with the RN, using backboard, C-collar, or other immobilization devices as necessary for injury stabilization.
  • Administers pulse oximetry, transcutaneous monitors, and end tidal CO2 monitors, and completes associated duties such as rounding, documentation, and checking proper function.
  • Performs various basic patient care procedures as per physician orders including obtaining electrocardiogram, scrubbing and cleaning wounds, checking visual acuity, checking blood glucose levels, obtaining a bladder scan.
  • Assists physicians and/or staff nurses during various clinical procedures. This includes splinting, removal of casts, passing supplies and instruments, assisting with sutures, removing sutures and staples, pelvic sheeting, setting up Hare traction, suctioning patients, providing emergency oxygen therapy to trauma patients, performing CPR, and the like.
  • Observes patients during and after treatments and reports adverse reactions or changes in condition to healthcare team members.
  • Maintains clean and safe patient care area by cleaning and stocking patient care rooms, checking expirations dates on supplies, checking equipment for proper operation, wiping surfaces of furniture and fixtures with disinfectants, removing waste/garbage, changing linens, and sterilizing instruments.
  • Follows up with Materials Management on supplies for department.
  • Responds to all emergency/critical care situations and follows established procedure and duties such as Basic Life Support (BLS) with emphasis on chest compression, airway maintenance, and ventilation.
  • Responds to Rapid Responses and Code Blues as needed.
  • Answers telephones and makes telephone calls as requested by Physician or RN.


REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • High school graduate or equivalent plus one to two years of post-high school training.
  • Washington State Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or a Washington State Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
  • If no CNA or CMA on date of hire, a Washington State Nursing Assistant Registered (NAR) required and must have plans to enroll in a certification-qualifying program. The class room training must be completed within the 90-day probation period and registration on the DOH website must be completed within 6 months of hire (tuition assistance available per request).


PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Basic.


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of one year recent experience in a health care setting involving patient contact.
  • One year of experience as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Emergency Department (ED) Technician.
  • Monitoring cardiac rhythms and identifying acute changes in patient’s cardiac rhythm.


ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Health Care Provider CPR Certification required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and EKG preferred.
  • Knowledge and handling of hospital equipment, and record keeping.
  • Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills.


SKILLS:

  • Ability to interact effectively with minimal supervision using good judgment, common sense, leadership ability and a thorough understanding of the principles of emergency medical care at the basic level.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with patients, hospital personnel, emergency service providers, fire department personnel and the general public.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures common to the ER department.
  • Knowledge of standard precautions.
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy and disease processes.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in providing basic technical emergency care.
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulatory requirements, i.e. HIPPA, EMTALA, AMA.
  • Familiar with simple medical laws and ethics, i.e., consents, confidentiality, etc.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures regarding: admitting, transferring, and discharge of patients.
  • Knowledge of processing of orders.
  • Knowledge of location of supplies and maintenance of supplies.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to sit, stand, walk for long periods of time over the course of up to a 16 hour shift. May occasionally encounter verbally abusive or combative customers. Must be able to lift approximately 30 pounds and participate in team lift activities utilizing safe patient handling techniques and safe body mechanics. Must be able to make decisions under pressure. Must be able to work under emotionally stressful conditions.

Eligibility Requirements - Employees regularly scheduled at least 20 hours per week.

Employee Dependents - Your legal spouse or domestic partner, Dependent children until age 26.

Waiting Period - 1st of the month following 30 days from your date of hire.
