Description
The Roskamp Institute, Inc., is a vibrant biomedical research and consulting organization in Sarasota, FL, that is focused on understanding and developing cures for neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s Disease, traumatic brain injury and Gulf War Illness. It is multifaceted, incorporating Ph.D. education, basic and applied research and consulting programs. One or two immediate, permanent, full-time openings are available for research associates in the mass spectrometry core facility for highly motivated, qualified persons. The facility is equipped with 5 state-of-the-art LCMS and GCMS systems and provides lipidomics, proteomics, metabolomics, preclinical drug development and other services.
- The successful candidate will work under the direction of senior staff to assist in carrying out existing projects by performing biological sample analyses, routine maintenance of equipment and participate in the writing of research reports in a small team setting.

Examples of Duties
- Prepare samples from animal and human tissues, including blood and plasma samples for analysis by mass spectrometry.
- Isolation of proteins, lipids and other analytes from human and animal samples.
- Prepare samples for and perform nanoUPLC-high resolution MS lipidomics analyses using Thermo Scientific orbitrap, QExacitve mass spectrometers and Exploris.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative proteomic analyses by nanoUPLC-high resolution MS/MS Thermo Scientific QExacitve mass spectrometers.
- Prepare samples for and perform metabolomic analyses using GCMS using Agilent GC/MS and LECO PEGASUS III 4D GCxGC TOF MS with AGILENT GC
- Assist in the operation and routine maintenance of analytical instrumentation including mass spectrometers at the Roskamp Institute.
Requirements
- MS or PhD degree in biochemistry, analytical chemistry or a closely related field.
- Ability to understand and perform chemical derivatizations on samples to be analyzed.
- Basic understanding of the theory and practice on mass spectrometry.
- Hands on experience using LCMS for biochemical analyses.
- Strong computer skills.
- Maintain detailed laboratory notebook and other relevant records.
- Skills for clear verbal and written communication.
- Strong organizational abilities.
- Ability to function effectively as a member of a team.
Valued experience
- Use of Thermo XCalibur, Proteome Discoverer and Trace Finder software.
- Experience with mass spectrometry based lipidomics, metabolomics and proteomics.
- NanoUPLC.
- Sample derivatization.
- Mass spectra interpretation.
- Scientific publication.
