About the Position:
Castilleja School seeks a Director of Student (and Family) Equity and Inclusion for August 2024 (12-month position) to develop and direct an integrated program that expands students' (grades 6-12) understanding of

  • an asset-based lens on the value of diversity, 
  • systemic and structurally sustained societal inequities and injustices, and
  • the value of purposeful collaboration as essential aspects of the leadership development program at Castilleja.

This position is housed in the ACE (Awareness, Compassion, and Engagement) Center, which seeks to integrate experiential learning into all aspects of the 6-12 student experience with a focus on equity, social justice, and leadership both in the Castilleja community and beyond. 

This position plays an integral role in partnering with deans and wellness professionals in developing vision and strategy on behalf of and alongside students that fosters a sense of belonging* and community. The director will work to ensure that systems are in place to promote equitable access to programs and co curricular opportunities at Castilleja. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a member of the ACE Center and work with the ACE Center team on collaborative experiential programming (including developing student leadership to participate in the NAIS SDLC Conference and other off-campus DEI leadership programming).
  • Lead planning on the school’s annual signature DEI Come As You Are community event  
  • Support student voice and leadership development at Castilleja through mentorship of the Student Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Leadership Committee (DEILC) and task forces.
  • Collaborate visioning for and coordinate programming for student affinity groups* 6-12 that incorporates and leverages the school’s leadership and antiracism competencies.
  • Affinity Groups
    • Develop and oversee structure, programming and content for student affinity groups
    • Support and train student leaders of affinity groups Support faculty/staff  advisors for student affinity groups
    • Support the DEI Consultant, Head of School and Division Heads to provide logistical support and guidance for parent affinity groups
    • Collaborate with the Director of Advancement  to provide logistical support and guidance for alumni affinity groups
  • Partner with the Admission Office to provide a bridge of connection and support and serve as the School’s liaison to underrepresented students (SES particularly) and families to ensure that they have equitable access to Castilleja resources, services, and activities  in all aspects of school and community life such as wellness, language support, tutoring, classroom support, and community programs and events.
  • Serve as Summer Site Director for Peninsula Bridge Program.
  • Collaborate with the Middle and Upper School Deans of Students and Division Heads to develop and implement restorative practices in student matters.
  • Support the DEI Consultant, Dean of Faculty, and Division Heads, and Head of School in developing DEI professional development programming for the faculty and staff as it relates to the student experience.
  • Serves on the admissions committee and partner with the admissions team to recruit a diverse student body that embraces the school’s values. 
  • Collaborate with Head of School and DEI Practitioner to support Castilleja School Association (parent/guardian association) Equity Committee.
The ideal candidate will:
  • Possess knowledge and application of best practices in advancing equity and social justice in independent school communities.
  • Possess knowledge of and experience in facilitating restorative practices and mediation.
  • Possess strong  written, oral, and cross-cultural communication skills 
  • Be detail oriented and resourceful.
  • Show initiative, model Castilleja’s antiracist competencies of valuing multiple perspectives and sitting with dissonance, and sustain integrity.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and implementing student programming that center on equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to nurture optimism, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Experience working on equity and social justice education, preferably with middle and/or high schoolers.
  • Experience collaborating with a diverse group of educators striving to move a community beyond its assimilationist habits and colorblind conditioning via a sustainable and inclusive process.
  • Evidence of successful management of collaborative teams
  • Applicants with Spanish language fluency are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Ability to work on occasional weekends in support of admission and student leadership events
Compensation:

  • Castilleja uses a competitive salary scale which takes into account  the range of experience, education and skill level. The yearly salary for this  position ranges from $105,000 and $125,000.
