Baldwin Paving Company, Inc. is currently seeking Roller Operators, with at least three years of experience to join our team. This will be a full-time role. This position reports to the Site Foreman.  Nights and/or weekends may be required in addition to regular day shifts.

Summary


The Roller Operator will safely operate the roller communicating on the prescribed roller pattern required, maximizing effective rolling width with the proper static or vibratory mode, selection of amplitude and frequency to maintain proper impact per foot for compacting hot mix asphalt or aggregate bases.


Essential functions:


  • Perform machine walk-around inspection daily checking fluid levels, hoses, isolators, drum scrapers, water system, distribution mats and wear components to verify machine is capable of performing safely and productively.
  • Report deficiencies to Foreman.
  • Perform pre-shift component check to verify all systems are functioning properly.
  • Operate the roller in concert selecting the static or vibratory mode with a corresponding amplitude and frequency (VPM) setting appropriate for the mix type and depth.
  • Safely operate equipment in and among traffic.
  • Perform manual compaction in areas not accessible to rollers.
  • Perform long pass, as conditions allow, to minimize the number of reversing locations.
  • Operate roller to maintain proper impact spacing to meet smoothness requirements.
  • Proactively communicate with grading, paving or roadwork personnel to monitor speed and adjust as required; effectively communicate with others to make adjustments that may be needed throughout the course of shift.
  • Perform end-of-day maintenance, clean-up and walk around to ensure mechanical and physical condition of the roller meets company standards.
  • Adhere to all safety rules.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education


A high school diploma or equivalent is desired, but not required.


Physical and Environmental aspects


  • Will need to be able to climb and descend steps/stairs and use handrails to enter/exit vehicles.
  • The environment can be noisy at times. The employee will be exposed to dust and fumes from cleaners, gasoline, diesel, exhaust…..
  • Employees work outdoors, and will be exposed to the weather, including extremes in heat and cold, rain…
  • Will be in a sitting position for long periods of time while driving and subject to the vibration of the equipment.
  • Could bend, stoop, twist, and either stand or sit for long periods of time. Requires manual dexterity and strength in arms and feet to manipulate the equipment controls, tools, and other items used to make adjustments and/or minor maintenance.


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any applicant. 


There will be times the employee will not work as an operator and may have to assist with the crew in manual labor.


This can require the:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds consistently.
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment-vest, steel-toed boots, helmet.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue, and to effectively jump, sprint, or throw an object.
  • Good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
  • Ability to quickly move arms and legs.
  • Will require the ability to sit for an extended period of time and the eye/hand/feet ability and coordination to operate a manual transmission and clutch in both trucks and any other equipment being driven.
  • Able to climb stairs/ steps and to use handrails to climb and exit the equipment’s raised cab.


Work Environment:


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving and mechanical parts and equipment.
  • The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
  • An employee will be exposed to dust and fumes from cleaners, gasoline, diesel, exhaust, etc.
  • Employees will work outdoors and will be exposed to the weather, including extremes in heat and cold, rain, etc.


    Other Requirements:


    Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times. Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required. Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary. Report to the assigned job site in proper attire and ready to begin work at the designated start time. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Safety Manual. Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.


    Personal Protective Equipment:


    Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA and company policy. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position: Coveralls, Fall Protection, Gloves, Welding Gloves, Hard Hat, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Safety Glasses, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, Welding Aprons, Welding Helmet, Welding Shield.


    Education, Training, and Experience


    • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.
    • Willingness and ability to perform manual work and follow verbal and written instructions.
