Job Description

Data Strategist

This position leads data analytics across the organization to inform business processes and strategies that optimize Community Impact, Resource Development, Community Engagement, and Brand Management activities. This position reports to the Director of Grants and Strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes a variety of data types and sources including United Way ALICE project, Census tables, school district, public health, qualitative and quantitative surveys and others to identify existing and emerging community needs and inform Community Impact strategies and program development;

  • Provides data collection and analysis for current and future United Way programs such as Work/Life Solutions, Breastfeeding Friendly Communities, Full-Service Community Schools, 2-1-1 WNY and others to facilitate program monitoring, performance improvement, and grant seeking activities;

  • Develops evaluation tools for and analyzes data collected from United Way grantmaking activities such as the biennial Community Investments process, Community Resilience Fund and others and works with the Brand Management department to tell a data-driven story about the work of United Way;

  • Develops and maintains a dashboard to track organizational Key Performance Indicators and reports regularly to senior leadership and Board;

  • Develops systems and processes to measure ROI on resource development, Community Engagement, and Community Impact strategies and make recommendations on existing and proposed activities in those areas;

  • Conducts annual analysis of fundraising Campaign data to identify trends in giving, recommend changes to donor designation policies, etc. to diversify and enhance resource development efforts;

  • Assesses organizational data management systems, practices and policies and recommends improvements to streamline and standardize data and ensure key data is available across the organization to facilitate decision making;

  • Presents findings and recommendations as appropriate to staff, senior management, Board, volunteer groups and external stakeholders;

  • Attends organizational, departmental and committee meeting and trainings as directed;

  • Supports the organization’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts;

  • Visibly demonstrates UW Values of service, integrity, collaboration, accountability, equity & agility;

  • Engages in job-related travel;

  • Performs other duties as requested.

Education, Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics, Information Management, Statistics, Business Analytics or related field and 1 to 3 years of experience or equivalent.

  • Experience with data models, database design development, data mining and segmentation techniques.

  • Knowledge of and experience with reporting packages and database query languages such as SQL.

  • Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, SAS etc.).

  • Experience with CRM systems (Salesforce, etc.).

  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, etc.

  • Ability to quickly learn and master proprietary software packages and platforms such as Andar and Allco.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to write reports and present findings for a variety of audiences.
