Position Title: Maintenance Assistant

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer & School Operations Manager

Term: Twelve (12) month position, salaried

POSITION SUMMARY

The Maintenance/Custodial Assistant assists in the maintaining of the school facility for students, staff, and public in a safe operating condition; maintains a preventive maintenance program and resolves immediate operational and/or safety concerns.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs general clean-up of all facilities. (sweeps, mops, scrubs, polishes, vacuums, extracts and so on, halls, offices, classrooms, restrooms, garbage and trash, walls, lunchroom, gymnasium, auditorium, etc.)
  • Maintains gymnasium floors, stages, movement rooms, lunchrooms, heating and air conditioning systems, or any other specialized tasks as appropriate.
  • Waxes, seals and sometimes refinishes various floors in the building. Works with MSDS regulated material and under Hazard Communication guidelines. May be exposed to biohazard waste during clean-up involving human blood.
  • Prepares and sets up rooms for special meetings, parties or various other activities and may work extra hours to accommodate after school activities and functions.
  • cleans up afterwards which involves arranging seating, furniture, lights, sound, etc.
  • Maintains school grounds. (removes snow, ice and debris, cuts, trims trees and shrubs,
  • Assist with the repair and/or installation of various items, systems and/or components as may be required (e.g. broken windows, roofs, building structures, floors, handrails, stairs, lighting systems, HVAC units, electrical units/service, plumbing/sewer systems) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition
  • Assist with painting tasks as needed
  • Cleans and performs minor repairs of drains (i.e. sink, toilets)
  • Install or assemble parts, classroom and office equipment
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and report all needs to Building Manager for ordering
  • Respond to emergency situations to immediately resolve any safety concerns
  • Maintain outside grounds (i.e. picking up trash, shoveling, salting, etc.) to ensure grounds are in safe condition
  • Monitor building via security cameras and performing walkthroughs of building
  • May take charge in the absence of the Building Manager or Assistant Building Manager.

EDUCATION/REQUIRED SKILLS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to operate equipment used in skilled trades
  • Ability to operate power and hand tools, etc.
  • Adherence to safety practices
  • Handling hazardous materials

KNOWLEDGE

  • Read and follow instructions; understand multi-step written and oral instructions
  • Methods, practices, tools and materials used in building maintenance and repair specialties

ABILITY

  • Be flexible and work with others in a variety of circumstances
  • Problem solve, communicate pertinent information in a timely manner
  • Meet deadlines and schedules
